how do i create gradient overlay on carousel image

i want to have gradient overlay over my carousel images. At what point should i put this? is it before the carousel item or above carousel-inner. i place it over both but not reflecting over the images. what am i getting wrong?

That depends.. are these images clickable or just for the looks?
It also depends on how your current code is crafted of course.
