Can a custom User Field value be a search criteria?

I would like to be able for each user to specify certain parameters which then drive the behavior of the site. I assume I would add those parameters to the User.

Can I then use those fields as a search criteria? for example, If the user specified a department (i.e, sales, marketing, mfg, admin) in a field, and there was an custom department field for articles, could the user's specified field be automatically used as a criteria in the search without the user having to enter it every time?

Another example would be if a company have multiple facilities, and a user is linked to a specific facility through a custom field. When the user logs in can the site automatically default to the user's facility, showing maps and content specific to that site.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah, I think it's good ideas, but I think you can find extension provider that build classified extended, like DJ Classifield extension. There are not many features like you wished in Joomla! core.

Just my personal recommend, Joomla! provides Custom Fields for articles, I worked on it and that's great, but will need Custom Field Search module for filter, or something like that, that's enough :)

Thanks. I was hoping for some sort of extension that I could add to do the search. I will check out the extension you mention and poke around a bit more. This was helpful.

Hi,
Sure, you can see it https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/dj-classifieds/
Unfortunate, it only has paid version.
