Hi everyone,
I was finally able to successfully install Joomla 3.6 on IIS with a SQL Server backend. This was quite a frustrating task since there is barely anything recent on the internet that explains how to do this.
For my own benefit, I created this document that walks through my installation process. Perhaps the document may help anyone else who wants to use joomla with a sql server backend. I have attached it to this post.
Feel free to let me know of any other corrections or things that should be added to the document.
Hope this helps
Nick
Update 10/6/2016: V1.1 Corrected some minor typos in the document.

Excellent! Thank you for sharing your knowledge regarding installing Joomla 3.x on IIS7 + MSSQL!
The best place for documentation like this would be the Joomla documentation website: https://docs.joomla.org/
At the moment, most documentation is about the most used server setup: Apache + MySQL
https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Installing_Joomla
There's a page about IIS https://docs.joomla.org/IIS but it was last updated in 2012.
Maybe you could add your installation guide to the Joomla documentation site?
Thanks in advance!

Sure! We can add it (https://docs.joomla.org/IIS) ... though I think it would be wise if other joomla users confirmed that the instructions are correct and how it can be tweaked to be more relevant to users. I say this because in my situation, I was just installing it as dev server on my laptop which is running windows 7. The more common scenario is likely installing joomla on a windows server. what do you think?
I pretty new to this forum... how would you post the document to the docs.joomla.org site?

At the login page https://docs.joomla.org/index.php?title ... :UserLogin there's an option to create an new account:
Don't have an account? Join Joomla! Documentation https://docs.joomla.org/index.php?title ... ype=signup
docs.joomla.org is a Wiki (is uses MediaWiki) just like wikipedia.org.
If you have ever added/corrected something to Wikipedia then Joomla Docs will look familiar.
If not, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wiki_markup gives some information about the markup language used in MediaWiki.

Re: Install Instructions Joomla 3.6, Win 7, IIS7, PHP5.6/7, MSSQL 2014
I have tried to install following the above directions. When we start Joomla we never see the option for MS SQL the only option is MySQL. Has anyone actually got the Instructions to work?
We are installing Joomla 3.6.5, PHP 7.0 (also tried 7.1 and 5.6.30), IIS 7 and MS SQL 2016. Any suggestions?

It appears the supported SQL server is SQL Server 2008 R2. See technical requirements here https://downloads.joomla.org/technical-requirements
