Joomla on Windows server

Post by shieldfire » Mon Nov 06, 2017 9:01 am

Anything special to note when running Joomla on Windows server?

I am trying it on Windows Server 2016 with IIS and MariaDB. Installed fine manually, the webinstaller didn't work when connecting to the db. The db installed (but couldn't connect to the db, reporting incorrect password. The installer isn't specified as compatible with the 2016 server) and extracting everything from the 3.8.1 zip-file then adjusting the permissions on configuration.php and installation-directory solved the remaining issues to get it all running.

For some strange reasons, installing on Windows is seldom a straightforward process. However, when it is installed, it runs very well, barring some strange 3rd party extensions that don't use the Joomla layer.

One tip: Make sure you are able to upload files through the media manager, and are able to install extensions. If you are not, then you likely have some permission issues on your folders.

Aye, I noticed =)
Fixed some permission issues on inetpub\wwwroot\tmp and \installation directories. I'll have some further look around and see what else isn't acting as expected.

Further to stuff that didn't work as expected was the need to enable modules. Specifically the need to enable specifically php_sockets.dll. Else online upgrades or installation will not work.
Somewhat confusing is that I have managed to mess up the installation, so that when upgrading from an external machine I get an error mentioning php_sockets.so (the *nix equivalent of the dll) while if I upgrade from the server, I don't. (I *think* it has to do with the URL. http://www.foo.bar works from an external machine, while on the server it is simply http://foo.bar).

Make sure the ID that the Application Pool is running as, has access to the directories it needs.
