ACL Issues - Items displaying to public when "Registered"

Hi All,

My search-fu may be inadequate but I could not find this issue on the forums and hope I am posting in the correct forum.

The problem is this, I am developing a site for my association at work and have never had issues like this on previous releases, I am currently running Joomla 3.2.2.

Here's the issue:

• If I set a menu item to "Registered" it is still visible to the public.
  When Clicked on the category heading and description are available.
• If I further use Category Blog but restrict the article to "member", a higher level of access within that category then it will not be visible to the public or registered levels and appears on a "member" login as it should.
• If a menu item is set to category or blog list, it publicly displays the description and a "new" button which allows a visitor to click and opens the editor to create a new category or blog entry.
• All sub menu items are visible as well even though they too are set to "registered".
• If someone clicks on the sub menu of a category blog list, the Title and description are visible there as well.

What I've tried:

• Hide titles and descriptions which makes it invisible to everyone.
• Made menu module "registered" and all elements (menu items and sub-menu items) registered and they are still visible.
• Made all items from category, sub-category and article "registered" and they still appear.
• Only when an article is published at ACL member does it seem to behave correctly, appearing only when a "member" logs in and remaining invisible to visitors and "registered" logins.
• All others are visible to any and all comers.
• Added In Edit: Tried adding "Read More" to article above and below the text.

Check which groups are included for your access level "Registered." My guess is that "Public" (or "Guest") is included when it should not be.

Now What? My site has lost all content since last week and there is no administrator control panel. I can log in to the back end but all that is there is my own profile. This install has been a pill from the get go and I NEVER had problems with Joomla 2.5 or even Joomla 3 before this last update.

Added in Edit: If anyone cares to look at this. My front end log in is gone, the admin page is bla.k except for the options gear. View database says all is up to date with no repair option.

A manual check of the database, configuration.php, index and templates all show intact with no untoward injections, entries or scripts. I guess this is a third rebuild. I wonder if WP webmasters have issues like this?

It sounds like you don't have a backup. If you do, you should try that.

It also sound like you (or the system) changed some things in your ACL settings. The symptoms sure seem like ACL issues. To deal with these issues...
See if you can reach this page after you log in to the backend...
/administrator/index.php?option=com_install

If so, install a copy of ACL Manager, then navigate to
/administrator/index.php?option=com_aclmanager

and use its diagnostic tools to fix the problems it detects.

That advice (to use ACLManager to fix ACL issues) helped someone else just a few days ago. ...I know ACLManager costs money, but it is a powerful tool and I assume your time and frustration are worth more than that small amount.

I have ACL Manager installed and was able to access it, nothing has changed since I set up all of the permissions, there is simply front page content and modules that are in the database and not displaying on the live site and a blank administrator page.

I have to consider an alternative to Joomla or strip it out and starting over again. It is a royal pain in the neck.

Is that a 3rd party extension ? If so then you have it configured incorrectly. I agree with rcarey it appears that you have connected 'Public' and/or 'Guest' user group with the Registered user group (either in a Joomla setting or a 3rd party setting). Another possibility is that in User manager >>> options ... you have set the 'Guest User Group' to Registered.

i had the same issue, with Joomla 3.7.2, after fixing setting under,
User->Manager->Options

Guest user group from Super User -> Guest.

it fixed my problem.
