Custom field type - multi select categories

Hi! I am looking for a custom field type that will add a custom field to an article. The custom field should select one or more article categories. It's intended for some kind of 'related questions' functionality. These question are in different categories then the article. The custom field 'categories' should return the ID's of the selected categories.

Does anyone know if this CF type is available somewhere?

Or can someone point me in the right direction to create this CF type myself? Maybe with some example code?

I noticed that this field type has been used in various parts (e.g., Featured Articles, Latest Articles, Popular Articles) of core Joomla!
