[ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
Hello
I'm posting that question here. Don't know if its the good place
I am actually testing the Joomla 3.7 Alpha 2 and I just found the new custom fields ! Very great !!
I just have one question :
I can't find a field to link a PDF file.
Would that be possible in future development releases ? Or maybe by future extensions ?
Thanks if someone can answer me

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
If the PDF is on an external server, you can use the URL field.
If you use a regular text field, the user needs to know the whole path to type in (like with the current Link A, B and C fields).
I prefer the media field. This produces a multi-part field, with preview, select and clear options. With the media field, the user can navigate through directories, and upload the file if it isn't already on your server. We store PDFs under the main \images folder (in sub-directories), and this makes it easy to upload or select the file, ensuring a proper path and filename.
Best wishes,
AC

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
Thanks for your answer.
I already tried with a media field. But it only show images files, no PDF files (or Excel or Word...)
And yes having to type the URL inside a text field is not a good solution I agree !
If the media field can show any documents type that would be great !

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
Yeah I've found this too - the fact it only lets us link to images kind of defeats the purpose since there is already an image field type. Calling it "media" implies multiple types of file types can be linked to so I'd like to see this one enhanced/developed.
One of the main reasons I wanted to use the custom fields was to allow for file selection instead of using the old "Custom Link A" option because this didn't allow for browsing which isn't very user friendly so it's disappointing to see, at least at this stage, that the custom fields don't add anything else on that front.
Hopefully it can be added/achieved?

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
Has there been any movement/workaround on this? Being able to select any file would be great for usability and make the fields even more useful.simonlogan wrote:You can't use the media field for PDFs just now

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
The problem was corrected in J! 3.7.2.
Note: J! 3.7 Alpha was never a supported version.

Re: [ALPHA J! 3.7] Question about custom fields
@skouf: if you're using J! 3.7.2 please start a new topic and state your PDF upload/viewing problem. If you're still using J! 3.7 Alpha, be advised that this version was never supported, is not supported, and there's no assistance available for it. Thank you.
