Joomla 4 release blockers

Post by sozzled » Thu Mar 18, 2021 7:02 pm

Like anyone else who's trying to obtain information about the status of J! 4 development, I read the Joomla! Community Magazine, I look for updates on the developers portal and the Issue Tracker, and I read the meeting reports from various teams involved in the project.

There are several reasons why the J! 4 project has stalled: some of these because of technical problems and some of them due to a lack of resources. For some time—for over a year—the most severe of these technical problems went by the label of "release blocker"; that is, a technical issue that fundamentally prevents the release of J! 4 (whether as a candidate for production use or as a suitable platform for stable production use) going forward. It's not that difficult to understand what is a "release blocker" especially in terms of ascertaining understand when or if J! 4 will be released or why there are issues preventing its release.

The last Joomla Bug Squad Team meeting report (dated 12 March 2021) mentions
Release blockers were the topic of focus for J4. We have 18 open RBs with 7 of those having PRs. We discussed reviewing those and determining next steps with the release lead on what can be moved to 4.1.

If anyone would like to contribute to the release blockers or with the project as a whole please join us on GitHub at https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms .
Fair enough and congratulations to the J! 4 development team for reducing the number of release blockers from twenty-seven three weeks ago to eighteen as of one week ago.

I can't locate any items tagged as a "release blocker" today. ???

Go to the issues page of the Joomla CMS github repo https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues
and click the "Label" filter to filter on "Release Blocker".
Or directly: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/is ... Blocker%22

Good news: Two Release Blockers have been closed, sixteen to go...

Thanks. There's always something new to learn about GitHub :( .

The problem remains, however, that "Release Blocker" is not an item on the Label pull-down at the Issue Tracker page. I think the Issue Tracker page may need to be fixed; try it for yourself. ;)

Good point. I am using github myself & hadn't noticed this issue at the Joomla Issues site.

I created an issue for it: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-websites/issues/1601

Well hope Joomla 4 rc will be released now in March and thats 7 days. And better as said here to try to remove the release blockers and fix the rest later.

These things will not be occurring within that timeframe. We do not have any indication about a RC version for J! 4. See https://developer.joomla.org/roadmap.html

Issue Tracker does not show Joomla 4 Release Blockers

Post by sozzled » Wed Apr 07, 2021 10:41 pm

According to GitHub and by looking at the Release Tracker page—click the Labels button—this matter has not been resolved.

Yes, you can find "release blocker" issues if you go directly to GitHub, as @pe7er explained earlier, but you can't find those items by using the Issue Tracker.

***slightly off-topic***

The current number of J! 4.0 release blockers down from the sixteen we talked about three weeks ago to about three today.

Re: Issue Tracker does not show Joomla 4 Release Blockers

According to GitHub and by looking at the Release Tracker page—click the Labels button—the Issue Tracker is still broken.

The current number of J! 4.0 release blockers has risen to eight. We're still a good way from seeing the next beta version of J! 4. Forget about a release candidate version; that's not happening this month.

Looks like there are not many people interested in the development of J! 4.

There's something very wrong with GitHub at the moment. I look at this every day: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/la ... %20Blocker

One day the number of release blockers is eight or more and then next day is four or less. It's good to see the number of release blockers going down. It's strange, however, that the number goes up again the next day; it's curious that the number increases but the increase is not attributable to new problems. It's just that the same problems are being re-cycled. It's almost as if one person deletes the release blocker label one day and then someone (else?) re-instates the label the next.

I wonder what's happening? ???

Yes it would be good now to finally get to the rc stage and focus to close the few release blockers only or move them to 4.1.

Everything else can be maintained/updated later.

This dev cycle have been loooong.

Time and timing is important too and nothing will be 100% for everyone everywhere upfront.

Hope Joomla 4 rc can finally be out of the box very soon. George where are you?

I started this discussion about problems with the Issue Tracker over a month ago. Those issues have not been investigated.

We need to remember that it was over three years ago (when this J! 4-related forum was created):

If you missed the category description, be informed that this forum is not an official support forum for Joomla! 4.0. Any issues regarding Joomla! 4.0 must be reported at https://issues.joomla.org/.
This is fine if
  1. the Issue Tracker isn't broken;
  2. the developers are confident about how issues are being tracked; and
  3. someone is monitoring these matters.
It's worth noting that the last bugsquad meeting report (which is monitoring these things) talks about seven open RBs and, when I looked today, that number had fallen to five. That's one piece of good news. It's not good, however, that the Issue Tracker does not help people who are unfamiliar with GitHub to obtain information about the current state-of-play.
