Hi.
I recently read and answered about useless standard article Hit counter and i guess we must make something to make it more useful in near future.
So my suggestion is: remove incrementation for this field or make it via plugin (so admin will can unpublish it).
Let it be 0, so anyone can make own plugin to make it more realistic (Cookies, ip data storage) without such rituals like make DB request for decreasing hit counter based on certain condition.

You do realise that it is optional to display the hits on your site?

of course i do!
but this USELESS counter shown also in admin panel and mean NOTHING (ok, it mean how mush time u, all visitors, including hundred bots, visit page).
so why it exist?
and many modules have sorting options for "popular articles". so, if u make several attempt to modify one article it will be most popular because even in admin zone hits increasing.
