editor -TinyMCE

Post by themrburns » Wed Dec 01, 2021 9:23 am

HI all,

Joomla 4.04
Comprising default install plus Akeeba Backup and Convert Forms. That's it

Editor default - TinyMCE

I have created 1 article and was able to create in normal way but now I cannot edit the article, nor can I create a new article. I just get the "article text". with no editable area.

When I load the article I see the code flash then nothing.
When I toggle the editor I get the strike through but nothing happens.

Have I switched something on / off by mistake?

When I change editor to none or mirror they work ok. I.e. I get an editable text area.

Since posting this I have installed the JCE editor and it works perfectly, so clearly the issue is the TinyMCe plugin.

I think this addresses the problem in the Issue Tracker: https://issues.joomla.org/tracker/joomla-cms/36179
Turn on Debug and/or Display Errors temporarily so you can see the full error message. I don't know if it's similar to the one in the Issue Tracker or something different. The actual error may be something like:
Trying to get property '0' of non-object in \plugins\editors\tinymce\tinymce.php on line 200

HI @amurray,

I read that thread but its all beyond me :) I'm Principally an end user that loves Joomla

However, when I went back into global reconfiguration - having NOT changed anything - It would not let me change from JCE to TinyMCE. Published a Invalid logging error. But I had not changed anything he cries. So visited Logging tab and it appears the "log Priorities" field had become blank. Changed to errors and it allowed me to save the change in editor.

Notwithstanding the above TinyMCE still does not display the the edit field or header menu. :(

Definitely something going on with in Global configuration.

There are two places where you can set the editor for a user. One place is in the global configuration; the other place is in the user profile.

HI @sozzled

Just updated my profile with the TinyMCE , saved, exited, signed back on. Same as before, TinyMCE does not display edit field in articles.

Thanks for throwing that in; appreciated.

This is almost always a javascript conflict. Your browser console will show you any errors.

Hi @brian,

These are the the errors on page on Opera and Chrome. Both on latest versions.

The last Png is of the JCE editor on same article which also has errors.

So it not a joomla content item you are editing but something with com_[youtube]?
Also in your original post you said it works with JCE but you are now showing screenshots of errors with jce

HI @brian,

No idea where the [youtube] came from.

This was a clean 4.04 installation, loaded with convert form. Then I created a welcome page - default TinyMCE editor. When I came to re edit days later I found my self in this situation. The JCE editor was installed to overcome the absence of editor.

The png in earlier post show both TinyMCE and JCE for comparison

Thought I would look in to the "[youtube]" ?

I have attached a wider view of same and it would appear to be "layout" shortened :0

I couldn't begin to analyse the cause of the problem with the information you've provided. By way of a passing comment that I wrote earlier, this shoudn't normally happen but it's more likely to occur if a third-party extension gets in the way of J!'s normal processing. It raises the question as to what third-party extensions are installed and whether one or more of them is the cause.

The Forum Post Assistant report will provide us with a list of the extensions you're using. Have you considered using this diagnostic tool?

Easy fix.

You need to read and update the htaccess file

## These directives are only enabled if the Apache mod_headers module is enabled.
## This section will check if a .gz file exists and if so will stream it
## directly or fallback to gzip any asset on the fly
## If your site starts to look strange after enabling this, and you see
## ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED in your browser console network tab,
## then your server is already gzipping css and js files and you don't need this
## block enabled in your .htaccess

Magic, @brian! I hit a similar issue with ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED a couple of days ago (although not related specifically to this discussion topic) and, when I disabled GZip compression in the site settings, I was able to get things to return to normal. So you may be onto something here. :)

@brian: would you agree that, in this particular case, there are two possible solutions here:

1) to amend the .htaccess file; or
2) to disable GZip compression in the site settings?

Hi both,
Thanks for taking time out to help; greatly appreciated.
I looked at the GZip settings and its switched off. I switched it on and tried the TinyMCE but no difference. Reset it back to off.

This is the section in the HTaccess but it could be double dutch to me :)

## These directives are only enabled if the Apache mod_headers module is enabled.
## This section will check if a .gz file exists and if so will stream it
## directly or fallback to gzip any asset on the fly
## If your site starts to look strange after enabling this, and you see

## then your server is already gzipping css and js files and you don't need this
## block enabled in your .htaccess
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
# Serve gzip compressed CSS files if they exist
# and the client accepts gzip.
RewriteCond "%{HTTP:Accept-encoding}" "gzip"
RewriteCond "%{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.gz" -s
RewriteRule "^(.*)\.css" "$1\.css\.gz" [QSA]

# Serve gzip compressed JS files if they exist
# and the client accepts gzip.
RewriteCond "%{HTTP:Accept-encoding}" "gzip"
RewriteCond "%{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.gz" -s
RewriteRule "^(.*)\.js" "$1\.js\.gz" [QSA]

# Serve correct content types, and prevent mod_deflate double gzip.
RewriteRule "\.css\.gz$" "-" [T=text/css,E=no-gzip:1]
RewriteRule "\.js\.gz$" "-" [T=text/javascript,E=no-gzip:1]

<FilesMatch "(\.js\.gz|\.css\.gz)$">
# Serve correct encoding type.
Header append Content-Encoding gzip

# Force proxies to cache gzipped &
# non-gzipped css/js files separately.
Header append Vary Accept-Encoding
</FilesMatch>
</IfModule>

Thanks again both

Well Gentle Folk.

Here is a conundrum for you.

(I have NOT changed anything in settings at all since my last post here.)

As posted above at the start of today could not use the TinyMCE editor.

Today I used Akeeba Backup to transfer to my live site. My live is now up and running. Guess what? I can select TinyMCE, and use as the default editor. Never would have guessed that would happen in a million years.

My Php on my Bitnami Localhost was 7.4.25 and on my live site is 7.4.26.

Could it be a Bitnami compliance issue? Naturally I have no idea as I not at one with these languages. :)

I noticed that in the backend of my live site that under system/global configuration the logging tab does not have any fields.

This is completely different to the localhost version that has umpteen fields.

Sorry Brian; no wish to upset anyone; All help here is greatly appreciated.

I am happy to use alternatives as workaround but felt my post would help other / developers as I would not expect this to happen.
Never had this issue in Bitnami pre J4.

Thanks again for you help and support

It was tabs on global configuration that he said stopped working on the live server. If you stopped trying to exalt yourself by knocking others you might be able to better concentrate on the problem.

@themrburns
If Bitnami caused problems on localhost it may have set things that caused problems when transferred to the live server. Try wamp on localhost and install the the Joomla full version zip https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla ... format=zip . Then transfer the site to the live server. If that solves your issues great but if not then we can look elsewhere. You could try on Wamp localhost using your backup then using the Joomla files from the full package to overwrite the ones Bitnami uses.

live site = no fields = bad
bitnami = has fields = good

Hence my response

Live site = Tinymce works = good
Bitnami = Tinymce doesn't work bad
Subject is 'editor -TinyMCE'
Hence my reply
Also Bitnami has it's own Joomla install that could complicate things.
Hence my other recommendation.
