503 error on administrator login
Hello,
I have a new Joomla install and it only ran for a day. The second day I tried to login it always gives a 503 error. The site works, also there I can login as a user, but I can't login in the administrator part.
After login it offers me to download index.php and it contains:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<html><head>
<title>503 Service Unavailable</title>
</head><body>
<h1>Service Unavailable</h1>
<p>The server is temporarily unable to service your
request due to maintenance downtime or capacity
problems. Please try again later.</p>
</body></html>
I enabled maximum logging and log everything and all I got is:

Re: 503 error on administrator login
1. Ask the authors of the non official install what changes they made to the install. (if it's gddy then you will have trouble getting a fix).
2. Did you install 4.0.5 or a lower version then update with the Joomla update package?
3. https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ please

It's just default official install, there is nothing custom about it.
Also everything worked perfectly fine for the first day, and how should I install an update when I can not login in to the administrator console?
I really would like to know how to debug this issue in Joomla and get control back over my site.

@harriebo The 503 message you are seeing is from your web host and not from Joomla. Please contact your host and they will be able to help you. It may be something as simple as "out of disk space" or "database space"

Re: 503 error on administrator login
yes, I can choose to install different default packages on my hosting, joomla, wordpress, and so on, but they just generate a default install for those packages, there is nothing custom about it. Also I have more then 20GB free on my hosting space and space for another 3 databases. Also the joomla website shows, and the admin interface to login shows, its only when I hit the login button for admin that joomla returns the 503 on the /administrator/index.php page. Also signing in on the user part of the site gives no issue at all and I can even change and add settings, so the database is working fine also.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Isn't there a way to get more info back or get logs? The php logs show nothing interesting and I cant find nothing in the database. I could access the server by ssh but there is just nothing telling me what is wrong. It really seems like one of the modules or something has updated and causing errors.

Update the metadata headers with pictures and descriptions for facebook and twitter. This is done with the TAGZ plugin.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
If it helps, I am familiar with all kinds of programming languages, databases and complex IT environments. I have full access to the database and you can ask difficult questions and so on. I am just completely stuck on how to debug Joomla when it gets stuck in a state like this. I was thinking maybe it helps to disable all the plug-ins from the database some how? But I could not really find how to do that. As long as I can get back into the admin interface.

Joomla backend System >>> Manage Extensions ... sort ID descending ... 3rd party extensions are then first. Depending on how many 3rd party extensions you have you can select all and disable or edit number shown per page and select all and disable.

Many members of this forum would likely tell you that installing Joomla by any method other than its own installation routine presents potential problems.I run Joomla! - 4.0.5 on a preinstalled webhosting package.
What can cause this sudden failure and to resolve it?
I also can not find any errors in the php logs.
Can you try installing Joomla a second time, separate sub-folder and clean database and install it by the method as documented here: https://docs.joomla.org/J4.x:Installing_Joomla ?
If it still fails, this could point to wider problems with your hosting service.
Can you post the FPA results as earlier requested by @webdongle? https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/

Re: 503 error on administrator login
But then ill loose the whole site and all data I worked on.... if this is the best support option ill get, delete everything, turn it off and on again, im going back to wordpress. I want to extend this in the end to a eco campsite management platform... and then when this [censored] happens I need to delete all? I dont think Joomla is very good platform if it can be debuged or solve issues like these.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Your problem is using softaculous or similar to install joomla, there are hundreds of reports of these installs failing, they are a pain... In your cpanel on the server make a DB backup so you wont loose your data. Delete everything and install joomla properly, then it will work properly. Don't blame joomla. When the site is running properly extract the data from the db backup and start installing it.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Sorry but I dont believe that using softaculous has anything to do with the issue here. If you wish to give me access to your site I will be happy to check it out for you.
It is completely wrong for anyone on this forum to blame any installation on not using the zip downloaded from here. It is just an excuse to blame the user for the problem - we must never do this.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
For example at least one of the errors in the initial report stack trace has already been identified and fixed on github for the next release. Just because you have not seen an issue yourself there is no need to blame the installer

And if there are any issues with softaculous they are very responsive to addressing them so as with every bug we should always report them and not just say dont use xxxxxx

Re: 503 error on administrator login
If you can't access admin you can disable 3rd party extensions just change the relevant field from 1 to 0 (zero). Last installed has highest number ID

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Hello,
thank you for the more extensive reply / discussion. I am away for the weekend, I can try both options. But gws, please explain my how do I make a backup from the cpanel when the administrator login is broken? I can make a db backup through PhpMyAdmin, and restore that after install, but i am not sure that will make any difference and is what you mean. Also I do not believe they provide custom installers, to be clear, this is my hosting providers Joomla install: https://www.strato.nl/faq/hosting/hoe-i ... ij-strato/ and its used across multiple country's for many customers.
@Brian, I can give you access sins the site does not contain any private content jet. But I think you need a database account sins the admin login is broken. And this seems not possible, I think I can only access the phpmyadmin interface using my hosting account which contains all my private and billing information and other hostings. So I can try things, and i will update about disabling the plugins, but giving database access seems a bit of a problem. I can give you my admin joomla account doh if you think you can do something with that.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
You back up your DB in the cpanel of your host, not joomla. If @Brian has offered to help you I will leave it to him as he appears to have different opinions about auto installers than I have.Good luck.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
So I tried removing the whole installation, but as soon as I restore the database the login error on the admin console returns... also when I disable all extensions the login error stays. So there seems to be something wrong with Joomla it self in the data set.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
The dataset is still really small, only 65k for the back up which I could send.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
It already breaks against a clean joomla 4.0.5 install. Do I need to package mine from the webhost? And how shall I send the files?

Re: 503 error on administrator login
So I wiped the whole env after making backups, and reinstalled everything and now it directly breaks on a clean install. I have send a second support request to my provider to ask what is going on on their side. Ill keep you updated.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
If a clean install breaks straightaway, something odd is going on in the server.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Agreed, we must never blame the user for the problem.
However, many of our volunteers have seen cases where the issue is clearly in the court of the host or the provider of a pre-installed Joomla or a quickstart package. Here are two such reports from the past week alone:
Automatically make logged-in user a "Registered User"
MySQL database with 3.10.4 installation

Re: 503 error on administrator login
So, it took them like 2 weeks to reply. And the "fixed" it... they did not tell what they did or changed, but suddenly it working, but it breaks when I restore my backup so I will have to start over. It seems my provider does not have its stuff in order. Sorry for the bother. I will reconsider the situation and make up my mind first if I want to continue with this party for the future.

Re: 503 error on administrator login
Wonder if there are any other problems that will show up down the line when a Joomla update is applied to the site built with their modified install. Perhaps consider using the Joomla FULL installation package?
