Post by chalupabatman » Thu Sep 29, 2022 3:19 pm

I just installed joomla 4.1.2, but I am not sure how to set-up ftp?

What steps do I need to take to enable FTP?

FTP has been removed from Joomla 4! No need to set up.

Hrm, how do I set it up so that I can access the file structure and move files over to the backend?

You can use ftp to interact with your host - I do it all the time using Filezilla to move single revised custom php files to Joomla front and back end. That is nothing to do with Joomla. What sort of files do you want to move to the backend?

ah i see. How would I set up filezilla to interact with the backend? What would my username/password be?

I'm setting up a dev site to test some custom php plugins.

If you are using a hosting service you set up your ftp account via cPanel (or similar).

Most developers set up a a test site on a laptop or desktop. In that case you don't need ftp at all. See this for how to use VSCode for testing/debugging: https://docs.joomla.org/Visual_Studio_Code_Primer

i've set it up on digital ocean

No cpanel.

I was hoping I could just use FileZilla for FTP

Dang, I wish I would have had that article 6 months ago when I was working on a custom component, lol

What I'm doing now is just calling an external php file, and I need to ftp the file over to the Joomla Server in order to call it from RS Forms

I had a brief look at the DO site - incomprehensible! I would move to a service offering cPanel hosting.

We don't make commercial recommendations here. You should look at this page for some information on remote and local hosting:

Yeah, I agree, @ceford. I tried to work my way through DO's documentation and I can't figure it out.

How did the OP create the website in the first place? How did the OP move files into the filesystem (and that's ignoring how to create the database username with ALL PRIVS and assign that username to the database. Probably some scripted installation [garbage] that creates the J! website, I guess. These are matters people need to discuss with their webhosting provider (or prospective webhosting provider before they hand over money):

Does brand-X have the ability to use FTP?
Does brand-X have the ability to manage database users?
Does brand-X have the ability to transfer files from my PC to the hosted environment?
Can brand-X do xxxx? (Replace xxxx with your own question).

Basic stuff, really, isn't it?

No, no, no! This is The Joomla Forum™ —a self-help forum to discuss Joomla!: this is not the what-webhosting-provider-can-you-recommend forum ... but if you want the "answer" to that question, start >>> here <<<. There are thousands of webhosting providers who offer packages for Joomla!, Wordpress and a broad range of CMS-based websites. Use Google. Let's not side-track the discussion with questions like

Any [webhosting company] you recommend?
Just about every person who uses this forum has their own preference about what is right for them hosting-wise. We can't recommend what we use because our needs may be different to everyone else's.
