smart search and indexing custom fields

There was a topic about this subject July last year, merging Smart search indexing for custom fields, and I'm now trying to discover if Smart search is supposed to index custom fields.

I have a setup with content (including custom field groups/fields) for logged in users, Cassiopeia and a menu with the old fashioned search and Smart search.

The old fashioned search includes results where the searchterm is (only) in the custom fields, Smart Search does not.
I've tried to find a setting for Smart Search to include custom fields but can not find it.

Should this work in some way? What am I doing wrong?

There is an open pull request for that feature.

In case it is not solved, i may develop a plugin that fixes it.

Thank you for your reply. On Twitter I got some info that it maybe there in Joomla 4.3, april. I'll exercise some patience :-)
