Getting smart search to work...

Post by P15-D24 » Wed May 24, 2023 4:27 am

I've been able to migrate a v3 site to v4 and got everything working from the old site with supported v4 template except smart search. I haven't been able to find any docs for installing smart search. I turn on smart search module, and index my articles via components -> smart search ->index. I get the search box in it's assigned location on the home page. When I enter a search value a drop down list of suggestions appears, but after selecting one I never get a search result. it just stays on the home page.

So what items need to be enabled to make this work? Should all search extensions that are v3 disabled? Need some direction as the correct setup process.

Thank you

Smart Search does not have to be installed separately because it is installed automatically with Joomla 4.

This article shows what to do: Transition your Joomla 4 website from Search to Smart Search

If the suggestions appear, the indexing seems to have worked.

If you would like the results to be displayed on a dedicated page, create a hidden menu item of type Smart Search - Search. Hide the menu item in tab Link Type by setting the option 'Display in Menu' to No. Alternatively, create this menu item in a menu that is not displayed in a menu module.

Couple more questions. I have two search modules typed "smart search": One with Pages as "selected" the other "all". Do I need both or is one an unneeded duplicate that got created?
In plugins I have disabled all the "search" plugins, however I have a "Content-Smart Search" and a "Smart Search- Content". One has a type of content the other finder.
And in extensions I have smart search versions marked v3 and some v4. Do I need to disable all the v3 versions?
It's a little confusing...

Also the link in the Transition your J4 website... article to the docs about "Setup the Smart Search Component" is broken. :-(

Got it working! Reloaded the core J4 components, made sure only the smart search components were selected.
Set up the hidden menu and it worked.
Thank you

This is the full link: https://docs.joomla.org/Help4.x:Smart_Search:_Indexed_Content

The broken link has now been reported in a comment to the Magazine team.
