New to joomla, trying to make personal site

Post by Tinchus » Wed Jun 12, 2024 3:08 am

Hello. Im new to joomla. I have installed (not me really but a script from a hosting provider) and it is working. Im just using cassiopeia for now in order to learn how to handle joomla.
I maged to do something, I have failed on other even when tryin to follow tutorials

Right now I have to main problems I havent been able to make it look as I want:

On the very bottom of the page I still can see an articule that belongs to main menu. I just want it to go away, justo show the main website. I want to just not show these ones, how can I do it?
screen1.png

Teh other problem is: on top of the website, there was a search buttom, I removed it and what I want is to have there a contact buttom. So far I have only managed to add it to a meny located to the left, but I want it to be alone and independen in the position indicated in the image (and with font and color style as the other menu if possible)
screen2.png
I think if I can learn how to do these 2 things I will complete my basic understanding of how joomla works

Thanks in advance

This is the info I got from Forum post assitant

Your FPA report shows problems: Max. Upload Size: 16M | Max. POST Size: 16M | Memory Limit: 128M

Those values need to be 32 | 32| 256 or better 64 | 64 | 256

If you can't change them yourself ask your host to change them.

We do not recommend using host provided scripts to install Joomla. In this case it has installed version 4 but version 5 is the latest and best.

You are seeing a Category Blog - you need to know about the different layouts controlled by menu items.

Try this documentation: https://jdocmanual.org/

Thanks for giving your thoughts. The script I mentioned is ok and it works, it just an automatic installer. Intalling joomla 5 if not possible, somre requirements are still not met in all host providers, for now 4 will need to be ok.
Regarding the limits, I will try to change them, I thinl IO can, nevertheless I dont see why they should be affecting what Im trying to do. With the values active now, I have already done some conections stress testings and it is ok. My website is just my personal professional site, is not intended to have if Im lucky more than 20 visitors a month.

I will read the documentation you pinted, but I think I have already visited that site and stilll some tyhings are not clear to me.

Please have in mind that may be these things are trivial for an experienced user like you, for a bigginner like me are not and that is the reason why Im requesting help

Hello Tinchus, I hope your are doing fine...

It seems like you need to tweak a lilttle bit your home layout. But I can't see if your entire landing page strcuture.

I can see you have 2 menu modules already, the one on the top, and the one on the right side, which you will need to position accordingly to your menu position instead of right.

I don't know if your 3 card articles shown on your landing page are FEATURED articles or you chenged the positioning of those articles.

Nevertheless; you should try changing the right menu position to menu instead of right and you should try to configure your BLOG LAYOUT options for your MENU ITEM to get rid off the main article view, you can set it to 0 Leading Articles.

If you can share a complete image of your landing page, I can help you with detail steps to do that.

You can change your blog layout options within your menu item (in the blog layout tab) or in the Global Configurationi options on your Joomla! Site within the Articles Options and then Blog/Featured Layouts.

For your top menu where you want to place the contact information, you can create a custom module with the email and just position it on the SEARCH position. That will be a quick fix, but you can also change some css on your menu with flex, widths and justify content, but that will be a little bit more advance.

I hope this insights will help you,

Kind regards,

Thanks for the comment Moches. I will try to follow your instructions, you gave me many hints on things to experiment with (hopefully I wont break anything).
Here is the screenshoto of the homepage (2 pieces) on top you will see the sear meny added as you mentioned to a maney located on top. My intentio is to separate it an put it on right top corner with same look in terms of color , letters, etc as the menu on the left. I tried doing the custom module hack, and it worked, the problem is a link to an email appears and have not found the place where I can configure letter, size, color... No a big problem to leave it where it is now.

in the bottom screenshot, the re is a big MENU with title INICIO and an articule, and I just want both of them to go away, and I dont know how. The same with the other marked one: on the right I can see a "MAIN MENY ES ES" box, and I dont know how to remove it

Regarding the 3 articles: it si a module called "Articulos - noticias de actualidad" (it was the deafult one in cassiopeia), and I just modified the articles to be shown there: 3 articles under the cathegorie "principales" and in that cathegori there are only 3 articles :

Thanks in advance for the help you can provide, I keep reading documentation in order to try to understand how all this works. The steps by steps instructios will help a lot to put all that reading together

Hello Tinchus, sorry for the delay on my answer...

First you need to know your positions in cassiopeia template, it will make your life easier, so perhaps you can find some help and understanding here...https://docs.joomla.org/J4.x:Cassiopeia ... tomisation

There is a position for the menu within the template that will show your menu just below your hero image, but I understand that you want your menu to appera in the top, thats ok. If you understand module positions in your template it will be way much easier to achieve some tewakings to the template.

I am assuming you created a new menu, so you have 2 menus in your site, the one on the top, and the want you want to work with, and then the other menu which is in the right side and you want to get rid off it.

I will suggest you work your menu (the one you want on the top) within the same menu you have on the right, adding your items to the right menu will and then positioning your menu on the right to the top position. If you don't want to have the "inicio" Item, you can actually edit that item and change it to "Ingeniería y Diseño Industrial" which again, I am assuming that will be your main menu first item.

If that's not the case, and you want to get your top menu as is, and don't work on the right menu module, you will need to set your top menu as the default, so your first item should be the default home page (página de inicio) and then you can get ridd of the right menu by unpublishing the module.

About you wanting to move the "Contactese" all the way to the right, you will need to do that with CSS and in that case, you will need to create your own css file in order to override template styles for you menu.

I just wanted to point out that if you learn and understand positionis on your template, it will be easier to tweak the template design very fast.

I know you are starting here, but it is not that diffucult to achieve what you want to do.

Try reading the documentation I'm sharing with you and let me know it helped you.

Kind regards,

Thank a lot for helping. I read the documentation and helped a lot indeed.
Thanks t that I understand much better how t organize the layout. Still I have some troubles wich looks smehow complicate due may be to the changes I did? In some point I activated the option of installing a 2 language sample data. So far I know that can not be undone. But also in the documentation I read about that and some fixes are required, that at least is what I understand from this page:

https://jdocmanual.org/jdocmanual?artic ... ngual-site

May be Im doing something wrong, or may be Im not doing something, because there is no way I can remove a meny called MAIN MENU:
menues.png
All the modeules I have are these ones, and there is no modules assigned to MAIN MENU
menues.png
Even with no module assigned, the WORD HOME, (A BIG ONE) is on the bottom of the website.

There is something missing on my undertstanding. The menu called MAIN MENU- BLOG that menu contains the 4 links at the top of the website. If for example i mark this many to be the default one, the the forst item there becomes a HOME link and no loger leads to the article it is suposed to.

Ideas of what Im doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Moches
