Do you use any project management tools?

Post by vincebodie » Wed Jun 19, 2024 11:08 pm

I have one site that I manage that is getting out of control. It gets so much traffic and so much new content that it has become hard to keep up. We have added more people to the team to manage article authoring and editing, but without a central place to keep track of everything that's going on we're not being nearly as efficient as we know we could be.

Ten years ago or more I had the chance to use Basecamp, and it was great - easy to navigate, keep track of who is doing what, when things are due, messaging between users, basic stuff like that. But now it seems like bloatware and I would rather do something "in house" so to speak. I've looked at some of the Joomla extensions out there, but they seem kind of lacking in one way or another. I really just want something that runs on the back end and ties together all the various tasks that come up, like:
  • Such and such module needs updating
  • New article due to publish on __/__/__
  • These pages need SEO improvement: _____ , _____ , _____
  • etc.
Anyone got any ideas? Could this be done with a combination of custom fields and user messaging perhaps?
Thanks!

There are also existing workflow tools in J4/J5. But I agree a kind of task list or PM extension is lacking. At one point I was using this: https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/db8-site-dev/ but unfortunately, it is not for J4 or J5.

That looks interesting, but I don't see much that will help a team of relative newbies manage various tasks.

Care to elaborate? I will be honest that I've never really explored this part of the J4/5 system.

That looks like it would have been a good option if only it weren't 7 years since the last update.

Read this about the Workflow feature. https://magazine.joomla.org/all-issues/ ... ow-feature. I'm not saying it will help 100%, but it might be a step up to where you're heading.

Other ideas:
You could develop a component using Fabrik that allows you to create applications (extensions) for Joomla, such as a task list through which users can mark-off tasks assigned to them. (I assume a lot is possible, with it, but it has a learning curve and may not be something you want to dig into if the need for this task management is more urgent. See https://www.fabrikar.com (direct link included to this extension (not on JED)).

For more immediate needs, I would try looking on sites like Sourceforge or similar, or even installing a script on your hosting via Softaculous (or similar) from eh "project management" category.
