Two menu items of "Articles - Blog Category" for same category and different tags

Post by mjrochaepm » Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:42 pm

Hello all,

I had already a menu item for "Articles - Blog Category" with category 1 and another for category 2. These are in a hidden menu, just for showing all the articles in each category, when someone clicks the category name in an article or module.
This was working just as needed, but I added a new menu item in another menu, to show items from category 1 again, but just for a specific tag.

Since then, all the links for all the articles from category 1 show up "under" the new menu, with it link, but I don't want them to do that. I've tried to search this all over but can't find a solution...

I've tested to:
  • unpublish the new menu item and all works great again
  • create another new item, same as the old one, but it doesn't get priority
  • check all category and menu properties but can't find anything that helps to solve this issue
So, can you help me find what I have to do to get all the articles links and the category click to point to the correct URL ?
Only inside a site section I want to show articles with just that one tag. Everywhere else should show category 1 without any tag filtered (as it is in the first menu option.

TIA for you help

Try menu item type Tag

Hello and thank you for your answer.
I understand what you're suggesting but it's not the same... if I use a TAG link in the menu the options are much less than the ones from "Artilces - Blog category" and the template we use gives quite a different layout when using those two.

I'm sure Joomla "chooses" to present the links to one of the menu items instead of the other because of some precedence criteria because I've tried with 3 different links in 3 different menus and I get different results based on each one I'm unpublishing at each time.

If I know the criteria it uses, I can try to publish the links differently, to be able to keep both but using the other one as the "main" and not the on that's being used right now.

Can someone find something to help further?

Well, I did it!
Just in case someone needs this what I've done was:
1. Transfer both menu items into de the same menu and don't use that menu anywhere (no module or anything).
2. Order that menu so that the option I want to be used is before the option that was being shown.
3. In the menus where the items were, create new menu items that just point to the items in the hidden menu above.

Clicking the category names has now the behaviour I need and I can use both menu items without conflict.
