Joomla Login Slow Now

Hello.
I am hoping somebody might be able to offer me some ideas and thoughts on the following.
Our website has recently become very slow to login to pages and areas that previously where all good.
Especially on our mobile site responsive version. I am trying to figure out what might be making this particularly slow on the mobile login view.
We have really gone hard on making sure images are small and not the reason and I think we are okay with this.
I have experimented changing the redirect landing page after you have completed the sign on to a basic small page and initially that worked great but after a day or 2 on a mobile site, that was slow too.
Last week we had 85 people all sign in at the same time to the same page to cast a yearly vote and some experienced a 500 bad gateway message initially and then things worked all okay again but the mobile login is still slow.

Recent changes that i wanted to ask for advice on is we have created a lot of extra user groups and access levels as we try to better refine login groups and I am wondering if that could be the reason?
I'm just trying to think of changes we have made to the site. We have gone from around 50ish user groups to nearly 300 very quickly. Could that be a factor or not do you think?

I also read that php_Max_int_var values might need to be increased but wanted to ask advice about this and better understanding before i applied it.

Any advice (however honest and blunt) is welcomed. I am really hoping to make the login experience as quick as it used to be, especially on a mobile device for our visitors.

Performance issues can be caused by 3rd party plugins or server issues

Could you give somewhat more info about your Joomla/server setup?

How is the performance of your website when you install it at some other server?
Could you create a backup and restore it on your local computer using a local web environment (like XAMPP)?

AMurray - Thank you for the link to the similar post. To begin with the post did sound like my issues but being honest the replies and conversation quickly went above my head I must admit sorry.

Our user login is certainly much slower on any mobile device like a phone or a tablet than a desktop.

At this point I have a feeling we might be causing the problem but I can't work out why. We have added lots and lots of Usergroups and ACL's lately to content and sometimes I think it is changes we have made to the template.

But I really don't know what is going on. I got quite confused reading all the clever stuff in the post link you put me on to in the end but it is a fairly recent problem. I checked and I am using the filesystem option and my sessions table is not big in anyway.

You have a lot of 3rd-party extensions installed. They can affect your website's performance.
System plugins run on every page load, which can make your site slower.

Maybe you could switch on Joomla's debug mode in the Global Configuration.
It will show you on the front-end which queries are taking too much time.

You've done so now, as you have found, you can pick and choose what to include, so you can run it two or three times, and each time.

For instance:

• (1) include the plugins but not the modules or components,
• (2) include modules but not plugins or components and
• (3) include components but not modules of plugins.

In that way you can then keep it under the character count that the forum is limited to.

Pe7er - I have turned on debug mode now thank you (although I couldn't do it through the Joomla Global Configuration page of Administrator - it wouldn't save the changes and just remained off - I could only change it by logging into my host account and changing the configuration.php page manually there).

I now have a very interesting set of stats and queries running that I am trying to understand but it seems that sp_page_builder has a big graph bar compared to others. I have attached an image to show this but we use this to create article pages now.

Sorry for my ignorance but where you say I have a lot of system plugins running on every page - how can i control this to not have them on every page? Should I work through each of them and turn them off or can I not use them on certain pages and define which pages to use? Or do they always run on every page BUT i have too many enabled or installed?

When I login on that site, the mobile version is very slow and there are lots of queries and information and long graphs that suggest time waiting and lagging but I can't fully understand where to pinpoint the bottleneck or issue sorry.

I have backed up my live site and restored it to another server hosting account that I have and thankfully (i think) the mobile login is still slow so I am hoping that proves it isn't with my hosting account or rather it is the same with both of them.

My website isn't showing any error reporting but with the debug mode on I get a heap of queries, duplicates and all sorts of stats and references that I am still not sure I understand.

Does anyone know what part to look at to prove or find what is causing the login part of signing in on a mobile device to be very slow compared to the same procedure on a desktop version and how I can identify the issue clearly so I can try and resolve it?

I am thinking is it the loading of everything or am i loading things before login is approved that I don't need to load?

On both sites I am using Session Handler - Filesystem after reading that is the better setting for speed and optimisation in a website article previously.

Do I need to start disabling plugins until the login speeds up and does anyone know why it is only really noticeable on the mobile responsive version of the website?

The desktop view is instant login to any page no matter what ACL or Group setting is on the user account.

This is probably a short sighted question but what makes 1 query and the 376 when ceford says he usually only see 50?

Is 1 query checking to see if the user is in the registered group? Is a second query checking if the user is in another usergroup?

If we have lots of usergroups now, is a query run every login attempt on every usergroup to see if the user is in them or not?

I suppose if I turn off plugins and components etc in turn, will that reduce the number of queries too?

My suggestion was that you look at the size of the session file which you should be able to find in your file system. A previous poster had a problem because this file was enormous. Check that the Task - Session Data Purge plugin is enabled. If that were the problem both mobile and desktop would behave similarly. Are you actually testing with a mobile device or the Browser tools Responsive Design Mode?

I got the following stats back after visiting lighthouse-metrics.com. Please see attached images.

I'm probably simplifying this all too much but my worry is not really about my site in general. We never get complaints from any of our members about our site speed at all and we have people in India, Europe, China and Australia.

The only complaint we receive and can agree with is the login process on only mobile devices has gotten very, very slow - very recently. Maybe the last 3 months.

I am seeing improvements to images and CSS etc and do get that our site can always be better and improved. 100% I agree with that of course.

I agree that I have 300+ queries running all the time and many plugins running maybe.

But then my brain asks, if the issue is with the site overall and the images and the CSS and the queries and the plugins etc - then why is it quick enough for desktop visitors and mobile visitors BEFORE THEY LOGIN?

Why is it also quick enough for them navigating around the whole site, watching 30mins and more video lengths and completing quizzes AFTER THEY LOGIN?

My question wasn't really about site speed as we never get complaints about site speed ever. We only ever get complaints about the Login process being incredibly slow ONLY on a mobile device in the last 12 weeks.

I'm worried (without any disrespect) that I am falling down a rabbit hole of investigation here now when the site (for the knowledge and skills we have) is fast enough 99% of the time it is interacted with.

If you visit and navigate the site without logging in - I am pretty proud of it and happy with the speed of it compared to other bigger sites I visit with bigger budgets and more staff.

If you login on a desktop its instant and then the member only content extra articles and stuff loads pretty good and quickly. If you visit on a mobile device, I'm pretty proud of it - admit 100% that the menu's need some work and hog the screen a bit in portrait view and also not great in landscape mobile view but the page speed between navigation of the content is acceptable to me I feel.

The only pain and real pain is logging in ON A MOBILE DEVICE and then getting redirected to the member landing page or elsewhere to any smaller article/pages behind the login. That is what I would love to figure out really.

I am grateful for all the advice and hope that is coming across but you know when you really only want to know if the picture on the wall is hanging straight right now before the art gallery opens???

The subsiding floor, the crappy paint job, the not aligned ceiling and the spirit level bubble quality can be for another day maybe and I WILL want to improve them all in time - I promise.

This week or next week though I really want to figure out why in the last 2 months max has the mobile version of my site started taking 45 seconds or more to log anyone in and then after that, the site responds as quick as it has ever done.

Apologies if I am sounding rude or ungrateful in anyway but I am just trying to work out the login problem for now.
The intelligent part of my brain is saying it might not be that easy and I get that. That all these things if addressed, will make the site so fast that the login will be fast again but surely wouldn't images without sizes defined and CSS not correct and 300 queries running on every page and all the time make every page and every interaction slow?

The only real slow thing is that blasted login and only on the mobile version of our template.

On any desktop page size I am hoping that the login is pretty quick and you can navigate our extra content no problem.

If you try on a phone or a tablet device though the login is poo.

I am a really honest guy and not offended in anyway if anyone can tell me that the site is slow for them before and after login but just now, people are only complaining that the login process on a mobile is unacceptable.

I hope i have understood you correctly and did go off and check that thanks. I looked in my File manager area of the server hosting control panel. PHPMyAdmin and checked the tables. The session table had between 60-90 rows and was around 65kb at the moment.

Is that what you meant ceford?

I just checked my Joomla plugins and one called System-Session Data Purge is switched on.

I couldn't find one called Task - Session Data Purge sorry but that might be my lack of knowledge of where to look.

Truly thank you all for you help and advice and I am feeling bad that I sound ungrateful and a bit dumb to be honest.

Testing with real mobile devices such as my phone and my ipad.

Also other members are emailing and calling saying they can't login or it is really slow on their phones and mobile devices.

Not using a Browser in Responsive mode or size settings at all. Thanks for raising that though too.

I can confirm slow login in my desktop browser set to Responsive Design Mode. However, after my first login subsequent logins were normal. Slow login may be associated with housekeeping after login - some script doing some job before sending the requested page. Try switching off Google analytics and test again.

In my joomla admin panel - the only references to Google analytics are 3 historic plugins and all disabled already.

Or do you mean removing the Google Analytics UA codes for various places in my site?

Session handler: filesystem

In Global Configuration, System tab, Session panel - where you have selected Filesystem as your Session Handler, the next field is Session Save Path, which should contain the path to your session save file. Find that file in your admin panel and see how big it is.

My save path is blank as shown in the attached image. Is this the issue?
Do you know if mobile device logins are handled differently to full site or all the same and the desktop version is just handling the requests better?

You can look in System / System Information / PHP Settings for Session Save Path - it should tell you where it is. However, this is probably not the cause of your problem. Every login creates a new session file - and they should be deleted after a period.

Login took nearly a minute just now but only 3 seconds on a second try. I am out of ideas! Other than the likely cause is waiting for a third party response - perhaps in one of those third party plugins.

I am still have no luck in working out what is slowing my login process down ONLY on a mobile device but wanted to pick up on something Pe7er kindly mentioned above.

You have a lot of 3rd-party extensions installed. They can affect your website's performance.
System plugins run on every page load, which can make your site slower.

Maybe you could switch on Joomla's debug mode in the Global Configuration.
It will show you on the front-end which queries are taking too much time.

Should I only be looking for System Plugins as a possibility to be causing this or can any type of Plugin cause it?

I also have switched on the debug option for my site and it seems that the following is always taking a long time to load.

joomla afterRenderComponent com_xxx

In particular afterRenderComponent com_sppagebuilder (18.7MB) (150ms)

I have contacted Joomshaper a few times to see if it is SP Page Builder that is causing the issue but they tell me to minimise my image sizes etc. Again, I come back to why after the login has taken place on a mobile, any page on my site can be loaded very quickly.

I need to find a fix for this and hope a fresh set of eyes might come across this post and offer any help.

This morning it took 50 seconds for my first login on a laptop. After that, login was just a few seconds in either desktop or mobile mode in either Firefox or Chrome. Whatever is going on seems to occur before the page is rendered. My guess is that you have something waiting for a remote connection. It could be your firewall.

You could try disabling third party plugins one at a time to see if you can find changed behaviour. Your site runs an enormous number of queries (355 with 298 duplicates) in comparison to a simple Cassiopeia based site (~50) so it will always be a tad slow. But that does not account for the long delay after first login.
