"This site is currently unavailable"

Post by kcolfacissej1 » Tue Jan 21, 2025 9:22 pm

Hello!

I took over managing a Joomla site as a favor to some friends. I was able to figure out most of the declarative tools in the admin interface just by playing around. I am a software engineer by trade, but have never worked in web dev.

Right now, when I go to the site I manage, it gives me a message that says "This site is currently unavailable.
If you're the owner of this website, please contact your hosting provider to get this resolved." I get the same message when going to the admin interface, and the webmail interface my friends use.

I am at a loss of what to do here. Is this something I need to contact Joomla about? If so, I can not find any ways to reach out besides this forum. Or is this being caused by some other service we are using?

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Thank you!

There is no “Joomla” to contact. If you are not familiar with Joomla your first step should be to contact your hosting provider and ask what the problem is.

Welcome to Joomla forum!

I would follow gsmela's advice and contact the hosting provider.

What you can do yourself:
Check your Joomla version, check the requirements for that version and compare it with your hosting.

You can check that in the joomla xml manifest file:
Check in your browser example.com/administrator/manifests/files/joomla.xml or use FTP to access that file.
It will show:
<version>x.y.z</version>

Check the technical requirements for that version:

You've already contacted "Joomla" - we're it. A community of volunteers. That's all Joomla has ever been.

So how far apart is web development and software engineering - a fine line I would have thought. These days, both involve coding of applications and scripts. Granted one may be more complex but they both start at the same base.

The first thing would be to turn on the debug and php error reporting. I'm sure in your field you're familiar with software debugging so that's what you'll be looking at doing here.
