Does the login you are using belong to the user group Super Users?

yes i am the superuser. i am assuming it was something in Joomla that i need to do to be able to disable this plugin. I am not familiar with all the ins and outs of Joomla. I did not have any issues in deleting the other plugins associated with that backup component.

Go to your cPanel or a similar page, provided by your host. Run phpMyAdmin and access the database table _extensions. Edit the row containing the plugin and change the column 'enabled' from 1 to 0.
