Porting Domain Name and Joomla site

Post by Mjkozz » Thu Feb 13, 2025 4:57 pm

Hi,
I have a few questions, maybe you can direct me? I already have a domain name, but it's at another provider. Will your hosting service allow me to bring it over here, and is there documentation showing what steps I should take?
Also, I was given a number of older Joomla and JoomlaXTC templates. Will they work here?
Thanks in advance,
Mjkozz

Welcome to the forum
Where is here?

I would suggest you use https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/ on your computer. You can create a folder in Wamp's \www folder
e.g. C:\wamp64\www\newfolder01
You can install Joomla there

Once you have a working site you can buy Hosting and upload your site to there. Connecting a Hosted site to a Domain name is a relatively simple process.

What is "our hosting service" - Joomla is not a web host. I think you mean https://launch.joomla.org/ which uses a third-party hosting company. I believe that would use the latest Joomla 5. A Joomla template on its own won't work, you need to install the CMS, then install the template. Joomla comes with a template (Cassiopeia) sol you can build your site from that.

Here's the minimum specs you need for running a Joomla website:
https://manual.joomla.org/docs/next/get ... uirements/
(the details about these specs are something you can ask a prospective web-host about.)

When you're ready to ask questions, please keep them as separate questions to the relevant sub forum e.g. "Installing Joomla" or "Installing a template" etc. This allows the forum volunteers to provide focused answers. It doesn't matter if you have a hundred questions, just ask them one at a time on the relevant sub-forum. If your question involves technical information the Forum Post Assistant will help you provide that information (see the red box at the top of the forum page).

The domain name held at one registrar should be fairly easy to connect to the hosted site. You just have to update the Domain Name Servers to point to your site. (ask your host and/or the domain registrar about that or refer to their respective documentation / knowledge bases. Some web hosts may do both things - host the site and register the domain name.
