Unable to upload videos

Post by Blackton » Mon Mar 10, 2025 6:25 pm

I've been trying to upload some videos onto my Joomla server, but it doesn't seem to do anything at all. A green bar starts to move for a second or so, then just stops, and that's it. The thing that keeps coming up is that the upload file size could be limited, but when I go into the setting inside of Joomla and change the upload size to 500mb, it still doesn't do anything. I spent hours reading different posts about this, and some people are saying that there could be hidden limits inside of php.ini. I didn't even have one, but I created it and set the upload values to 500mb in there as well. It still doesn't upload, and still without any explanation or feedback. So then I read that there could be other random files sitting around the operating system that are overriding the limits that I set. So I did a lot of searching and finally found some other random file that seemed to be setting those size limits, but after setting those to 500mb as well, still nothing! Then I set it up to run phpinfo() and ended up opening and looking through dozens of files that phpinfo() says could be affecting things, but I can't find anything in any of the files about the upload size. This is getting very frustrating that it's so hard to find where these settings are hidden, or even that that is the problem, since it's not even giving any feedback at all, but just not loading. I was hoping that someone might be able to give some direction at this point, as I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

Please use the Forum Post Assistant and post the public results here. Have you tried uploading a small video (1-2Mb)?

And yes, I tried all different video sizes, and it seems that I can upload them up to about 10 mb, so it does seem to be the size that is the issue. The problem is that I don't know where the size setting is hidden, as I already set it in multiple places, but it apparently is getting overridden by some unknown file.

Your Memory Limit is below the minimum for J5. Try 512M.

In the administrator menu, go to Content / Media and select the Options button in the Toolbar. The first item in the list is Maximum Size (in Mb). What is your setting?

As I mentioned in the original post, I have the max size set to 500. I also set that to 500mb in php.ini and elsewhere. That should be well enough for the files to load, but it's clearly not adhering to the values that I set, as it appears to be enforcing an actual limit of 10mb. So I'm trying to figure out where else it could be getting the max size from.

BTW, you'll see that even the Forum Post Assistant is saying that the max upload size is 500mb, so I assume that this means the system is actually using 500 as the value. But then why aren't the uploads working for files over 10mb? Is there some other value that limits this as well?

Is the Max. Upload Size: 500M php value only being applied to the folder it's in? Create a php.ini file in the
/administrator folder

This is typically different from the system maximum upload size. Did you check it?

Yes, I had set that limit to 500 as well when you had mentioned it before. Is there anywhere else that you know of that could be overriding the values I set? Thanks!

Are you trying to upload them directly into an Article?
Are you using a component to upload them?

Well I was inserting them through the Content -> media section, but when I try to upload it directly into the article, it appears to open the same media window, with the same result, where it shows a green progress bar start to move across the screen for a second, then it disappears and nothing happens.

Have you tried a non-Joomla method to upload videos, such as ftp or your OS file manager?

It is possible you have mod_security blocking large file uploads.

I haven't tried the OS file manager, but I kept thinking that would be so much easier if you could just do it that way! I'm not sure how to find the right folder though. Where would I need to put the video relative to my OS filesystem? I found the site template folder, so maybe I can solve my other ticket (deleting the wrong favicon) that way? But I'm not sure where the video files are stored; they don't seem to be in the site template section...

OK, I found the folder where the videos are stored. It was just the images folder at root. I was able to copy the full video in there and it works fine! So I guess the problem is averted at least, as long as I am not trying to upload the files remotely in the future...still would like to know how to get it to work properly, but at least I've gotten it to work for now! Thank you!

It sounds like you've already checked many of the common settings, but there might be other server configurations or permissions causing the issue. You could try checking your web server logs for more detailed error messages or debugging clues.

Re: Unable to upload videos

For something like 500M, FTP is probably the better way, to upload directly to the /media folder or a sub-folder within it, and then insert the video from the article editor in the normal way. HTTP protocol was probably never designed to handle 500MB uploads.
