Problems on multilanguage site

I have from years a multilanguage site [removed].

Now, updating to Joomla 4 (default template Cassiopeia), I have a "Forbidden" problem with the italian language (the default language is the english one).

"Rewrite URL" is enabled in global configuration.

The "htaccess" file is the J4 original one (htaccess.txt renamed htaccess). The "strange" think is that if I add "index.php" to the italian link I have no error (see redirect3.jpg). Also any internal italian page linked from menus works.... except the Home that is forbidden.

Redirects 301 (see the images) are made from htaccess or from code of Joomla4

- unzipped the package
- updated all the unzipped package files via FTP

You have a Problem with mod_security on the Server.

Look at the Server Logs for clues.

SOLVED (from the support team of the server).

Upgrading from J3 to J4 has been automatically created (why ) in the "public_html/" folder an empty folder called "it".

The redirect to this empty folder caused the Forbidden error: folder has been renamed to "it_" and the problem has been solved.

The "it" folder has NOT been created from me nor the server admin, so there is not a my mistake.
The "it" folder has been created in the public "public_html" folder: If I had noticed the folder I could have easily renamed it myself, avoiding the support ticket.

Joomla does not create a \it folder. If your site was being redirected to it then simply renaming it would produce a 404 response. I am not accusing you of lying I am simply saying that your explanation does not add up there is more to it than you realise.

I would suggest running the fpa https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ and post the results here. There may be other problems that volunteers on the forum might recognise. Spotting problems now will save you a lot of time by sorting them now.

Webdongle is right. If you check the official Joomla 4.4 repository at https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/tree/4.4-dev you can see that the \it folder is not part of Joomla.

Maybe an installed 3rd party extension created it?
I recommend to follow Webdongle's advise about using the Forum Post Assistant to give somewhat more info about your setup/server specs.

Joomla didn't create the folder, I certainly didn't create it, a plugin would also install its files in the folder (that is empty)... it doesn't remain that it was created during some maintenance intervention on the server. By whom and why remains a mystery.

In any case renaming the folder the site now works, all I have to do is fix a lot of minor details.

Session Path Writable: No ....................

The default path in DirectAdmin is : session.save_path = /opt/alt/php81/var/lib/php/session

not writable by Joomla but surely writable by the server (or the default path it would not make sense).

I can change it by DirectAdmin to: /tmp but so doing I can't see any change on the web site and I wonder if it is worth changing the default path..

Then... it's true that at 73 years I'm probably turning stupid but (even if it's true that I still don't know Cassiopeia well, while with Proto I did what I wanted)... it's also true that I've been managing the site for 13 years and I'm not yet at point of creating a folder on the site without realizing it.

I received recently a server admin message which informed that there would be maintenance on the site: evidently, I don't know why and how, the problem arose in this way.

I have changed by DirectAdmin the Open_BaseDir, sobstituting 74 with 81 and adding the default session.savepath (/opt/alt/php81/var/lib/php/session).

In practice I don't see the slightest change managing the site, but it seems cleaner this way.
