Sorry, There was a problem we could not recover from.

Post by gregazar » Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:40 am

I have been having this problem installing Joomla 4.0 on multiple Ubuntu Server 20.04 machines. I can install 3.10 with no problem on the same machines but when I open the install page for 4.0 it immediately displays the error - "Sorry, There was a problem we could not recover from." and says "The server returned a "500 - Whoops, looks like something went wrong." This is happening on a Ubuntu Server 20.04 LAMP. I have been able to successfully install 4.0 on a Windows XAMPP installation with no problem, just can't get it to install on Ubuntu. I have been running Joomla sites for many years but this one has me stumped. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Ubuntu Server 20.04
Apache 2.4
PHP 7.4
MySQL 8.0.26
Joomla 4.0

Welcome to Joomla forum!

Maybe some necessary PHP Server Modules have not been installed on your web server.

Switch on the PHP error reporting to see the real error behind the 500 server error.
Or check your Apache error log.

Thank you for the tip on resolving this issue. I had already enabled logging and no related errors are logged. Maybe I don't have logging properly enabled. This is without question a problem with my Ubuntu LAMP configuration but it has worked with all previous version of Joomla prior to 4. I haven't been able to locate any docs on the required modules for PHP/Joomla 4. It seems there is simply not much info on Joomla 4 yet.

I use Ubuntu 20.04 and installed from the Ubuntu repo: PHP 7.4, Apache 2 and MariaDB (MySQL replacement).
I haven't run into any local server issues with Joomla 4 yet.

Can you increase the PHP error level?
You can do that via php.ini or via .htaccess

Is it a server on localhost or a remote server you are Hosting on the internet?

I have been installing all instances of Joomla 4 on Linux VMs as a server on localhost running under Windows Hyper-V. The results are as follows.

All instances were on 64bit platforms.

Ubuntu Server 20.04 Hyper-V VM, 4 cores, 6 GB RAM Joomla 3.10 works and Joomla 4.0 does not work. I have tried this on 3 different Hyper-V servers with fresh VMs.

Windows Server 2019 Standard Hyper-V VM, 4 cores, 8GB RAM using XAMPP with MariaDB and Joomla 4 works fine.

Windows 10 Professional Hyper-V VM, 4 cores, 8GB RAM using XAMPP with MySQL 8.0.26 and Joomla 4 works fine.

Yes the logging level is E_ALL and I have tried enabling it in both php.ini and .htaccess and I am seeing error logging, just nothing related to this issue and nothing new immediately following restarting the apache service or attempting to run the Joomla 4 setup.

Any time you see the red page of death in Joomla 4 you need to edit /configuration.php and set

Code: Select all

$debug = true;
Then refresh the red page of death (A feature I brought to Joomla 4) and then the full error message and stack trace is shown. Then you can start debugging based on that information.

Why did you introduce a red screen of death to Joomla 4?

Before me, someone implemented a new Error Handler in Joomla 4 - and introduced the Symfony Error Pages.

They would look like:

Image

In fact to have a customised error page, we first had to contribute code upstream to Symfony

see: https://github.com/symfony/symfony/pull/37492

The red screen came about because it was better than the default Symfony Error Page.

Would an error page with instructions to edit the configuration.php be better than a red screen?

No because the red screen is a smoke screen for a live site.

It never displays the error and is not meant for admins to look at, its meant for site visitors to look at.

How many times have you got an WordPress or Amazon error page, which told you technical details on how to enable debug mode? never... Its the same with pretty much every major PHP framework too, including the example I have already given from Symfony world.

Once debug mode is on, then you can see the error and the trace and start to understand the real issue - as an admin.

I should point out, that the red screen is TOTALLY CUSTOMISABLE by override, just create a fatal-error.custom.php in your template folder - see the code in /templates/system/fatal.php on how that would work.

You can redesign it as an override - eg: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/35352

Well whatever was causing this was fixed in 4.01. I installed 4.01 and I'm up and running. About 2 hours later 4.02 was released and I upgraded to it with no issues.

Joomla 4.02
I had the same problem on the server, exactly the same message before installing it.
(Apache 2.4 PHP 7.4 and 8 )

I installed it on Windows Wampserver, worked fine,
and then I moved it to the server already installed.

Worked fine there too

Ubuntu Server 20.04
Apache 2.4
were your OWNERSHIP permissions correct on the ubuntu server? Joomla needs WRITE permission to the file system and the number 1 issue on a self-managed Ubuntu/Apache server is that you need the files/folders to be owned by www-data:www-data and not root or your SSH username.

Without the exact message, found by enabling debug mode, all we can do is guess. If you enable debug mode in /configuration.php when you have the Red Screen Of Death everything suddenly becomes a lot clearer...

I'm still stuck with the original problem, which is installation failing with the "red screen". At that point, SFAIK there is no configuration.php to set debug on. And the model config within installation has debug set to true, although there is no sign this affects the installation process.

It is likely that your server doesnt meet the minimum technical requirements to install Joomla then... let me get you a link... one moment...

When going to /installation you get a red screen of death, manually edit /installation/includes/framework.php and set const JDEBUG = true; on line 16 and then you get a more helpful error page.

Thanks. Would it not be helpful for that to be set normally? After all, it is only ever the site creator that gets to see the installation interface. "It is likely that your server doesn't meet the minimum technical requirements to install Joomla" - are they documented anywhere?

You would be surprised how many thousands of installations folders are publicly available on the Internet at any one point in time!

A quick Google will find the technical requirements of a server to run Joomla!,
