Using XAMPP To install Joomla on Windows 10

Post by JamesTruelove » Fri May 27, 2022 4:55 pm

Hi All

I wish to try out Joomla! 4 on windows 10 using XAMPP
Whenever I follow a link to install XAMPP on Windows 10 the link takes me to a download site for Windows 8?
Is there not a version to install on Windows 10?

I would recommend Wampserver over Xampp, you can change DB and php versions on the fly with Wamp.

I am only just starting to think about trying out Joomla 4 on a Windows 10 laptop. There are a lot of different opinions on what software to use! I was just interested what people have used.
I gave up migrating to Joomla 4 on our live site due to the difficulty experienced. We decided to stick with Joomla 3.10 rather than subjecting ourselves to the work involved.

You might be interested in this:

The Version 8 referred to seems to be the version of XAMPP rather than the version of Windows.

Ahhh I did not realise that. I assumed they were referring to the Windows version. Many thanks!

Wamp is preferable to xampp for many reasons

XAMPP's versioning also indicates the version of PHP included I think (and so is only *one* version of PHP).

Where with WAMPServer you can use whatever PHP version you want - they have a full selection that you can add as add-in modules.

Eventually installed Joomla 4 successfully using WAMP on my Windows 10 laptop.
Now I can get to know J4 without risking production site!
Thanks to all

You may have found them already, but the sticky topics at the Wampserver Forum have the instructions and the alternative repo at https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/ has all the latest updates and extensions like PHP versions.

If you don't have Microsoft Visual C/C++ Redistributable packages or (in some cases) if you have reinstalled your Windows files then you need to install the packages in order.

Installing Joomla on Windows 10 using XAMPP is definitely doable, and I can understand your frustration with the download links for XAMPP. Rest assured, you can use the Windows 8 version of XAMPP on Windows 10 without any problems.
To get started, simply download the Windows 8 version of XAMPP and install it on your Windows 10 machine. After that, you can install Joomla and get started with your web development journey.

@RudyWhite welcome to the forum.

The big problem users have with xampp is that you are stuck with the php version. But with wamp you can change php (and database) version on the fly

I can see why the OP is confused about which O/S the system runs on. The XAMPP system requirement only lists Windows O/S up to Win 8 but not 10 or 11, and nothing earlier than Windows 2008/2012 (server).

I also like https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/ for the fact it has periodic updates to the WAMPServer application without having to reinstall everything (including restoring sites).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on WAMPServer and its periodic updates, @AMurray. It's always great to hear about tools that make our work easier and more efficient. I completely agree with you that having to reinstall everything, including sites, can be a hassle.

I've personally used WAMPServer for a while now, and I've found it to be a reliable and user-friendly option for local development. The fact that it's regularly updated without requiring a complete reinstallation is definitely a big plus. It saves a lot of time and effort that can be better spent on actual development work.

Do you have any other tools or tips that you find useful for web development? I'm always interested in hearing about new solutions that can help improve my workflow.
