Joomla 4.2.2 backend problem

Post by ErwinGeeroms » Sun Sep 11, 2022 1:28 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with the backend for a NEW Joomla 4 installation.

I already had a Joomla 3.8 website and I upgraded it to Joomla 4.2.2 (to my surprise everything works inspite of some warnings and errors).
But there is too much garbage in that site, so I wanted to create a fresh Joomla 4.

Before the upgrade I was at php version 7.4 but I upgraded php to version 8.

I downloaded the Joomla 4.2.2 full package, extracted the files on my computer, created a new directory at my service provider (one.com) and copied the files to the new directory using Filezilla.

Then I went to the appropriate URL to start the installation. This worked perfectly.
Afterwards I get the option to go to the website or administration pages. The website works without any problem, but ....
When I open the backend (administrator page) it seems like no CSS is applied. I checked the internet for this problem, but nothing really helped. So I deleted the new directory, deleted the sql files, re-uploaded the same files and retried the installation.

This time the administration pages opened normally and I could start configuring the site. But, when I wanted to add a new menu item, the button to choose the type of menu didn't work.
It didn't work in any webbrowser, cleaning the cache doesn't help, no answer on the internet.

So ... I deleted the joomla 4 directory, deleted the sql files, downloaded Joomla 4.2.1 full package, did the install and now I get the CSS problem again when opening the backend.

I contacted my service provider and they said I would have to contact Joomla.

Can somebody please assist ?

The site is at diehardagnetha.com/j4.

Welcome to the Joomla forum!

This sounds like the double gzip issue, explained here:

I'm sorry, but like I said I tried a lot of "solutions" and none helped ...
My installation has a htaccess.txt file and no .htaccess file.
But i tried renaming the htaccess.txt to .htaccess and commenting out the gzip lines. Didn't work.
The site itself works normally, it's just the admin page that has a problem.
What I find really strange is that there are this kind of problems on a NEW installation.
When I reinstall J4, sometimes I get this problem, sometimes I don't ...

When this issue occurs at the back end, does the page have javascript errors? Use the Web developer tools (F12) and check if the Console tab has messages in red.

Please post the results from the Forum Post Assistant (FPA) by following the instructions at https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ so that the configuration can be reviewed by our volunteer experts.

Although the .htaccess in the sub directory shoud override the one in the root ... could it be that the .htaccess in the roo is causing the double gzip problem?

Interesting question, @Webdongle. I'd be interested to know the answer.

I avoid all of these "double gzip" problems by just deleting forty-odd lines of unnecessary code from the [recommended .htaccess file (created by renaming htaccess.txt) for J! 4.x]. I'm interested to know if the .htaccess file (that uses these J! 4.x improvement) propagates its way down the chain into subfolders. So your question, about whether to look at a .htaccess file in a parent folder that causes problems with sub-folders below it, is relevant.

In my opinion (and I'll be caned from pillar to post for writing it) this improvement had resulted in dozens of problems for people using J! 4.x. Again, in my opinion, while I don't have anything against lines 139-172 of htaccess.txt, I feel that the entire section should be disabled (i.e. place # before every line) by default and leave to website owners to decide whether they want to use those parts or not as they wish or may require it.

I will take a caning as well because I agree with you. Further I would suggest the .htaccess is not a 'one size fits all' and depends very much on server settings.

My rational for asking if the .htaccess in the root is causing it is:
If no .htaccess in the sub folder then the .htaccess in the root is used, therefore the .htaccess in the root is observed downwards.
So
IF the .htaccess (in the root) has code that breaks the server paths for css
AND the .htaccess (in the sub folder) does not have code to undo it
THEN
The double gzip problem will exist in the sub folder despite it being removed from the .htaccess (in the sub folder).

I like the reasoning which seems to agree with Apache.org
The configuration directives found in a .htaccess file are applied to the directory in which the .htaccess file is found, and to all subdirectories thereof... Directives are applied in the order that they are found.

@abernyte
Yes and if there is a .htaccess (with the same commands) in a sub directory then they override those of the one in the root.
The full quote is https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/howto/htaccess.html
The configuration directives found in a .htaccess file are applied to the directory in which the .htaccess file is found, and to all subdirectories thereof. However, it is important to also remember that there may have been .htaccess files in directories higher up. Directives are applied in the order that they are found. Therefore, a .htaccess file in a particular directory may override directives found in .htaccess files found higher up in the directory tree. And those, in turn, may have overridden directives found yet higher up, or in the main server configuration file itself.
But the point I am making is if the .htaccess in the root has code that causes the gzip problem then it will affect the Joomla in the sub folder. Even if the sub folder has it's own .htaccess it will not necessarily override the one in the root.

But shouldn't it also effect the website ? Because that one loads perfectly ! Only the backend has the problem...

I think you have a style sheet missing from your template. For me it is:

<link href="/j4xdemos/media/templates/administrator/atum/css/template.css" rel="stylesheet" data-asset-name="template.atum.ltr" data-asset-dependencies="fontawesome" />

Dear Ceford,
you are absolutely right : there were no files in the css directory.
I copied 6 files (that were on an earlier backup) to the css directory and now it works !!
Thank you very much !!
It is strange though that these files were missing when I did a completely new install.
Now I have to check if the he button to choose the type of menu also works, and maybe do a comparison between the earlier backup and the new install... maybe more files are missing...

Thanks again !! :D

Webdongle, if you read my original post you'll see how I installed J4.
Downloaded the full installation package ; copied it to my hosting provider and started the install ...

The backend works now but I cannot upgrade to J4.2.2 (error : An error has occurred.1104 The SELECT would examine more than MAX_JOIN_SIZE rows; check your WHERE and use SET SQL_BIG_SELECTS=1 or SET MAX_JOIN_SIZE=# if the SELECT is okay )

And the button to choose the type of menu (when you add a new menu) still doesn't work.

Never had these problems with J3 ...

I have been to sleep since then so forgot all the details. Souns like a database problem. https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ may help locate the source of the problem and perhaps try setting error reporting.

Okay, next episode ...
Cleaned the J4 installation (files + database)
Re-uploaded the J4 installation files
Did the installation (same as last times).
Guess what ....everything works : backend, menu type selection button, .....
