Update overrides questions Topic is solved

After upgrading some core files get updates but you have overrides for them.

Most of my files are from Cassiopeia.

A site message says this:
"The original of the template override files listed below has been updated. This list aids you in reviewing those changes and marking them as checked as you progress."

But it is ambiguous in some ways to me. Before you pedants jump on me looking to criticise my brain just move on. For those of you also feeling like me and anyone who is helpful people please keep reading.

• It tells me that the original has been updated- ok. Good.
  I also understand that I get a useful tool to make the checks. Good.
  What action I need to take- urmmmm help with this needed.

What I understand is that I should edit my updated files yet I don't have enough coding knowledge to do this. So I feel it's worth posting asking for advice on what I should do. Please save your time (and other readers time) if you don't have value to add even if you may have something to correct me and dissect this post. Thank you for all the rest.

That is really helpful thank you. As I suspected the updates are getting ignored in the files where there are overrides. There is a lot of work to be done each update. That's my new problem and I don't have a solution. I have so many files that are always changed. I don't get any issues like this in Joomla 3 and Wordpress.

If you have instigated template overrides then you have to accept that the core files may change as the software evolves. The override was your way of "freezing" the file for what ever functionality you built.
J3 and Wordpress both have always allowed template file overrides they just don't have the J4 functionality to alert you to the core file change.

I think it was the alarming amount of changes that Cassiopeia kept bringing. I made a child theme which I think caused the problem.

How do we accept the new files, or merge if required. I think this is the bigger question.

Admin > System > Site Templates > Select your template > Updated Files
Review them and accept the overrides.

I can't see where to accept. I only get the chance to mark as reviewed. If that is what makes the overide get accepted then I may have been inadvertently doing it.

Oh am I supposed to click into the editor and just click save.. How did I miss this..
