Back end loads bad if I turn OFF debug?

Currently running Joomla 4.4.3 on PHP8.2.

We dialed up the PHP from 7.4 today when we installed a new version of Regular Labs Modals. We had the error reporting and debug on for a while because the site was tossing errors until we updated the php. Now though I am hitting a strange problem where if I turn OFF the debug the back end of the site loads as if there is no CSS file. If I set debug to false the dashboard doesn't load properly. If I turn debug back to true then the back end loads fine... Any clue what could be going on here?

Please post the FPA report, and any PHP or debug errors (if any) that are showing on screen.
FPA is here: https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ - follow the instructions, download and run the fpa-en.php script in the same folder where Joomla is installed.

Disable the Modals plugin. Do the problems remain (i.e. with no styling of the back end). This is to rule out Modals being the contributing factor.

The no-styling thing could come down to the often (recently) reported double gzip issue. See https://kuneze.com/blog/110-joomla-double-gzip-problems for more tips on how to resolve that.

Different css files are loaded in debug mode than normal mode. Use the inspect function of your browser and check the console for errors.

FPA is below. Thank you for your insight into this.

I read the gzip stuff and removed the lines from the htaccess but that did not solve the debug issue.

I also turned off the modals plugins and that also did not affect anything.

The geoff.php error thing is a test file that godaddy put in there. I deleted it after doing the FPA.

Are you using, or can you restore the original default .htaccess file that comes with the Joomla download package? It's called htaccess.txt. Upload that and rename it to .htaccess (make the existing file something like htaccess.bak). I think that's a step in the resource above I had already provided.

Another idea.....create a brand new site - install a fresh Joomla 4.4.3, plain vanilla, no extensions. Does that work without errors - and loads all styling correctly? You should be able to install a second site, in a subfolder on your hosting. Create a new database for it.

Finally (whether related to the issue at hand or not, it seems Event Booking (your version 4.8.0, available version, 4.9.0 on JED) could do with an update. All other 3P extensions seem current.
