My 4.4.9 dashboard shows:

Session metadata is disabled, cannot display the list of logged-in users.

How do I enable that?

Go to the System tab of the Global Configuration and browse to Session. Turn on Track Session Metadata.

Rename your .htaccess file to htaccess.bak then rename the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess.

The FPA report shows that there are a couple issues that may explain the problem. If these tips do not help, change the Error Reporting in the Global Configuration to 'Maximum' and turn on the option Debug System to get the PHP call stack and post the error details and the call stack into your reply.

As you mentioned, the last FPA results are from Joomla 4.4.0 using PHP 8.2.4, with no connection to the database. The FPA script uses the database connection details from the Global Configuration, the file configuration.php in the main Joomla folder. No idea how Joomla could be working if the FPA cannot connect to the database.

How did you restore from the back done in Joomla 4.4.0? Did you empty the main Joomla folder first and use a new database schema? That is the only way to restore an older version successfully.

I restored from a previous Akeeba backup. I did totally delete everything from the root web directory beforehand.I did not wipe out the database first. I will try that next

No difference. FPA still reports it can't access the database yet both front and back ends of Joomla seem to be working fine

Check the properties of the file fpa-en.php. Is it a real file or perhaps a symbolic link elsewhere? Same check with the file configuration.php, please.

If the FPA script was uploaded to the main Joomla folder, the same folder where the file configuration.php is located, and Joomla works, the FPA script should also be able to connect to the database.

both fpa-en.php and configuration.php are not symbolic links and are real files. They both (along with the total Joomla directory tree) reside in the webserver root (/var/www/html). And all are owned by www-data.

I think I found the issue. Somehow, Joomla thinks there is a database prefix (Global Configuration > Server > Databases Table Prefix) of jos_ but in configuration.php, it is set to empty (public $dbprefix = '';). If I set that to jos_, it breaks Joomla but FPA is now happy.

I inherited this website from someone else so I have no idea what they did! Of course, now I've got to figure out how to fix this mess (I assume it is the source of my overall upgrade and metadata problems.)

Akeeba Kickstart, at least the Pro version, allows the database prefix to be changed before the restore operation.

Alternatively, if you have shell access to the database server, use the mysqldump utility to dump the database into a text file. Use an editor like Notepad++ to change the table prefix as a global replacement, then restore the database.

I do have Notepad++ (great utility but that's another story). I will have a go. I also use phpMyAdmin quite a bit.

The existing database seems not to have any table prefixes as it is however, which confuses me as if I remove the Prefix setting within the backend (Global Configuration > Server > Databases Table Prefix), the site errors out (the same way as when I tried to set metadata). I suspect there are bigger issues than just the Prefix but the website is quite mature and involved. I don't even want to consider having to rebuild it from scratch so I'll try anything!

Well, at this point this thread should probably be closed and I should open a new one. I'm having all sorts of database anomalies/back and front end crashes when I try using a database prefix. Unfortunately, SEARCH isn't revealing any similar issues to what I'm experiencing.

My plan is to eventually update the site to 5.xx but - obviously - I need to get everything correct before that...
