Thousands of update emails Topic is solved

I woke up this morning to over 3,000+ emails from my website telling me to update to 4.4.11.

I immediately went in and made the upgrade; and yet received about 200 emails in the next hour. I then disenabled the Joomla update notification plug-in and it stopped; until later it started again at about 200 per hour. Now at almost 1:00 p.m. it started back up and I enabled and disabled the plugin and it seems to have stopped.

But does anyone have experience in something like this happening?

Does the emails come from Joomla or your host's cpanel?

It says "This email IS NOT sent by the Joomla! project. It is sent automatically by your own site," with the subject "Joomla! Update available for ..."

Could it be an external source sending the email such as Softaculous, on your web host. This depends on if you used such a thing to install Joomla in the first place.

I've never heard of that amount of email for the email notification of updates, buty I don't use that feature, and didn't install with Softaculous (or equivalent).

Are you using an extension such as Akeeba Admin Tools which I believe has an option to turn on email alerts for Joomla updates etc.

Go to Global Configuration. In the Component list at the left select Installer. The normal Update Cacheing period is 6. If it is set to 0 I believe that causes a notice to be sent with every page load - so it could be bots collecting site data that us causing the email problem.

It was set to "0" and I have changed to "6"; I will monitor it, and thank you for that help.

To summarize: I turned OFF the plugin and the setting to send emails and was still getting them; usually about 200+ per hour.

Update after changing Installer Update Cache to 6: it momentarily stopped around 9:00a; then at almost precisely 11:00a it sent me over 600+ emails.

Why is this question in the Joomla 5 Forum if you are being asked to update a Joomla 4 instance?

I think you should run the Forum Post Assistant and post the public results here.

Is there anything in the administrator/logs folder that could give us a clue?

You could look in the extensions table for the updatenotification element and see if there is anything in the params field.

The problem stopping for a certain time is consistent with the change of cache time but sending multiple emails isn't unless you have used the same Super Administrator email address hundreds of times.

I wonder if you are getting delayed emails from before the update and before setting the cache time to 6. Come back in a day or so if you get more emails even though you have updated.

Knock wood, but I have not received any upgrade emails since around 9:00a today, so almost 8 hours. They have been coming in spurts (200+ at a time), but this is the longest they have been quite, so maybe ceford's suggestion of a time delay was the reason. Thank you all again; this was very annoying and I appreciate all the expert advice.

post script to this. 4.4.12 is now out (Tues this week) - have those emails started increasing again, or has the issue settled down and not returned to the levels as you originally reported?
