Setting SEF Menu etc Topic is solved

Hi
Having decided to rebuild a site from scratch to eliminate a problem to which it seems there is no answer, I now find I cannot remember how to setup a "sef" menu.
In fact the rebuild is a good thing as I am able to quickly and easily improve the formatting as well as bring the contenat up to date - much of it was written in 2000 to 2014.

The old site has a menu like this:

and the menu items are all collapsed.

The new site seems not to have this - in fact it is like this [local]

When I change the settings [Global Configuration Site to Search Engine Friendly URLs] to Yes, then that is Ok. But is I then change Use URL Rewriting then I get 404's whereas the live site [with its knackered menu] is set that way.

Anyone can tell me what this aegit 75 year old is doing wrong ? Especially where to collapse the menu items.

If it works without uncommenting #rewriteBase then to uncomment it.

It is a common mistake. Often uncommenting #RewriteBase / stops it working.
If you are on localhost you will need to uncomment #RewriteBase / and add the correct path.
Also have you checked the rewriting is enabled on the server?
Is the site in a sub folder?
