Thank you for the guidance so far.
I’m using Joomla v4.1.3 and now seem to have trouble updating Joomla core and extensions.
The site is working (Google SEO has also fallen dramatically, I think maybe related to Joomla 4 but I’ll post separately).
I uploaded 4.1.3 from localhost (which has no problem updating).
I suspect I will be unable to update to 4.1.4 (when it comes).
Updating from 4.1.1.to 4.1.2 worked normally (click on update in the backend and Joomla core and extensions will update.)
Since 4.1.2 I have received the following error messages if I 'check for updates'.

Update: Could not open update site #1 "Joomla! Core", URL: https://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml'
Update: Could not open update site #9 "Joomla! Update Component", URL: https://update.joomla.org/core/extensio ... update.xml

I have numerous other errors up to ‘Could not open update site #90' when I try to update extensions

I contacted my webhost.
They said, after some questioning on my behalf, that:

'We have checked and found that there were some mod security rule ID's triggered for your domain and we have whitelisted them now.’

That did not fix the problem. Then they said:

'So, we recommend you to get this checked with Joomla support or developer and if they suggest any server end change for the resolution, then please let us know and will look into it accordingly.’

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?
What can I instruct my webhost to do, if indeed there is something they can do?
Any advice will be much appreciated.

You have two versions of com_jaextmanager?
com_xmap has had no support for years?
Perhaps make a backup then uninstall all your old extensions.
It may also be time to install a fresh J4 and rebuild from scratch?

You're already using 4.1.3 as stated above....and there are no further Core updates. 4.1.3 is the latest available version.

Along with the other suggestions already mentioned, remove the old Joomla 2.5 templates.

Thanks Webdongle and AMurray.
I’ve managed the immediate changes you suggested, except uninstalling ALL old extensions (will get to that, it might take me a little while).
That did not fix the problem. I will still not be able to automatically update as I cannot get to update sites.
I thank Webdongle for their idea of a clean rebuild (are there ‘standard' instructions for doing so, as I’m not looking forward to it).
However, would a rebuild help when I can update automatically on localhost and not on my live site?
That said, if 4.1.4 comes out, and I can’t update, then I will install a fresh J4 and rebuild.
As another idea, perhaps I will set up a brand new Joomla site on a subdomain.
If I can update the new site, then the problem's my site, if not, the problem should be with my webhost. Next fortnight's task...

2. Create a new Article copy/paste (via a plain text editor) into the new Article
repeat step #2
or
1. Install fresh Joomla without sample data
2. Use a 3rd party extension to port the data
