Not happy with upgrade to J4.x Topic is solved

For a long time I am a happy Joomla user. But over the years my websites have become more and more complex. I made my own templates and installed a lot of components and plugins to perform special functions. So I hesitate a little to upgrade to J4.x. It would mean evenings of work to tune the J4.x template and find and configure the plugins that I need. At first I was happy with the way the first upgrade went. That went almost without a problem.

But now I really have a problem or a series of problems. I am afraid it is caused by a damaged J3.10. version. The question is how to solve it:

1) The Joomla update check does not work
* I selected Joomla Next, but it still reports I am up to date. No J4 checklist appears
2) I tried to configure error reporting, now it reports configuration.php is not writeable (even when I set it to 777).
3) When I force the upgrade with a new upload it goes wrong. Is does not want to store the file (and the max upload size is sufficient.
( I removed/disabled all the extensions with id => 10000)

Are these known problems? It already took me houres. I am afraid it is more secure to do a clean install of j4 and import all data in the database.

I would:

• install that J3 website locally in a web environment,
• install a clean J3 website next to it (in another database but with the same database prefix)
• copy only tables that you need in the news site (categories, content, menus, users) from the old to the new J3 website
• same goes for the extensions
• backup that new J3 website
• install it in another folder with another database
• do the Joomla upgrade with that 3rd Joomla 3 instance

Sorry, I gave it up.
So I installed a fresh version of Joomla 4 and imported the following in phpadmin:
* the categories - just export the csv or sql from J3 and import in J4
* the articles - make a copy in phpadmin of the J3 content, remove the index xreference and the import to J4

I succeeded in import over 300 articles. I see them in the database but not in de Joomla backend.
Even after checking in the content they do not appear.

For content csv did not work wel because of all the special characters in the text.

If you check Content > Categories, you'll see that they are counted correctly in the Categories overview.

The imported articles are not shown in the Content > Articles
because the references in the workflow table "#__workflow_associations" are missing.

The next that was not perfect yet were the categories. The category lists did not show the articles.
I had to do the following:

* go to the Menu's and select the main menu and choose rebuild (in dutch 'opnieuw opbouwen')
* go to the categories and open each category and save it.
* go to the article menu and open and save each article.

Maybe I continu with all the obstacles I meet when upgrading to J4.x.

I continued with the following:

* positioned all modules on the cassiopeoia positions (easy when you know what to do, what helps is that functional names are used) for instance position a new main menu module in the menu section.
* started tweaking cassiopeia using this: https://magazine.joomla.org/all-issues/ ... navigation

But then the next obstacle was there:
I wanted to create a user.css to make template overrides. But as soon as I try to create a new file or edit a file in /templates/cassiopeia/html the system reports:

And show a button to return to the control panel

When I make a new file user.css in /media/templates/site/cassiopeia/css.
It is made but I am not able to edit the file an get the same error.

So to finish the description a last tip:

It is a good idea to make an temparary copy from the Joomla 3 site that is accessable too. It is nice when you can show the old and new site together and compare the css codes with the Inspection tool in Chrome of Edge.

When you are familiar with css you can identify the relevant blocks on the old site and copy them to the user.css and rename the class names to the J4 classes. Most of that was possible with my site.
