Site crash while trying to update

Post by yumasan » Wed Oct 02, 2024 4:37 pm

I'm updating from Joomla 3 to 4 and even though I disable all plugins that the live update says will cause issues, once I start the update, it gets to 90% complete then the site crashes with this error:
Sorry, there was a problem we could not recover from.
The server returned a "500 - Whoops, looks like something went wrong."

Is there a way to find out what is causing the crash?

I was able to find some plugins and settings to disable that allowed the update to go thru, but now I'm having this error: 0
Cannot access protected property Joomla\CMS\Menu\MenuItem::$params

I'm getting this error also when trying to see if there are any extension updates:
An error has occurred.
0 Attempt to assign property "version" on null

At the dashboard is shows "Unknown extensions..."
Below that is shows "Error checking overrides"

You need to restore your back up. You have to empty the joomla root of files and empty the database before you restore as a failed update corrupts the database.

Thanks. I had done a restore prior to doing this update.
If I do a restore now, the site will revert back to joomla 3.
Also, if I update the database back to the joomla 3 version, I'm assuming it will further break the joomla 5 site/update, correct?

Once you have a working site,then you can think about updating to J4.

Use https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/ on your pc to update. Once successful use Akeeba to transfer the updated site to your Empty Host server and empty database.

It was working in Joomla 3. The crash didn't happen until updating to 4/5.

The crash is caused by an extension that is not compatible. You have to find out by setting error reporting to Maximum and activating debug ( both in admin "global configuration."

Thanks, I was able to get rid of what was causing the error with the error reporting info.

Now there's a new issue. If I change from PHP version 7.4.33 to 8.xx, the area that checks for updates (joomla version, extensions, etc) errors out.

See Screenshot:

If I click on extensions:

Compare the selection of PHP extensions in PHP 7.4.33 to PHP 8 and select any extensions in PHP 8 that were selected in PHP 7 but not in PHP 8.

Check also the following line in the file configuration.php in the main Joomla folder:

Code: Select all

	public $live_site = '';
The last three characters are two single quotation marks and a semicolon.

Please post the results from the Forum Post Assistant (FPA) by following the instructions at https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ so that the configuration and the versions of third party extensions can be reviewed.
