404 Category not found after 3.10.x to 4.4.9 update

Well here we go again... I've been through a bunch of other related posts but have not found a solution. First of all here's the live 3.10 site:

The J4 test site is in a subdirectory (https://sexwithoutpainbook.com/j4/)

The J3 site is on PHP7.4.
The J4 site is on PHP8.3 using this in .htaccess located in the /j4 directory:

Right off the bat I see that it says "PHP Supports J! 4.4.9: No", though further down it shows all PHP extensions as being 8.3.13, so it seems that perhaps my .htaccess rule is not working?

If as you suspect, it's your .htaccess, perhaps try this:

rename your .htaccess to htaccess.old, then upload Joomla's version (included in the installation ZIP file as htaccess.txt). Upload this file and rename it to .htaccess. Does the site now work?

Tried that too in .htaccess, no go.

Most hosts should allow PHP version changes through cPanel or equivalent? Some may only allow global PHP version, and some per-application or subdomain or folder.

I run my own VPS and know just enough to be dangerous. In any case setting the PHP version for the whole domain to any flavor of 8.x doesn't work, and it breaks the live site which requires 7.4, which is why I did it via .htaccess (forgive me if I'm repeating myself here).

What is this in reference to? Might be something to try but I don't know what it is.

Point your Domain to the new folder
Move your main site folders/files to the new folder
(Leave the public_html/j4 untouched)

That will eliminate problems associated with nesting the two sites and make it easier to find the problem.

Ok, if I'm reading you correctly, have both the live J3 site and the test J4 site both in subdirectories, like this?:

And when you say "Point your Domain to the new folder", do you mean like this?:

By default your website is loaded from the public_html folder of your account. The public_html directory is also called web root folder or document root folder. If you've created a test website under a sub-folder and you want it to be displayed when you type your domain name, add the following lines to the .htaccess file in the public_html folder:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain-name.com$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain-name.com$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !folder/
RewriteRule (.*) /folder/$1 [L]

In the above lines you should replace the following 2 strings:

domain-name.com - Type your own domain name
folder - Type the name of the sub-folder which has the test/development website
