Upgrading from 3.10.12 Topic is solved

I have updated a couple of other sites with no problem. This one is complicated though and I think I need some advice. I have failed the update three times today. I would really appreciate any advice.

I have put off updating it since the template vendor has promised for over a year to update their template for J4, but they have just said that they will not. In addition, the template doesn't work with php v8. Also, part of the site is a Moodle installation. Moodle requires the collation be utf8mb4_unicode_ci

In addition it is using VirtueMart.

I follow the steps as usual, however the update fails:

JInstaller::Install: Error SQL illegal mix of collations (utf8mb4_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8mb4_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation '='

Table 'databasename.buesa_guidedtours' doesn't exist

Then a notification that it failed, then:

installer::parseSchemaUpdates finished with 'false' result.

It seems you have PHP 7.4 and J4's min is 7.2.x but recommended is PHP 8.2

You seem to have in hand the issues with PHP and compatible templates so won't comment on that matter.

The primary error you said you had was "Error SQL illegal mix of collations (utf8mb4_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8mb4_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation '='" which is a database problem. The mix of collations seems to be the issue caused by Moodle's specific requirement (?).

You might ask your host how to fix that in phpMyAdmin (or otherwise someone on the forum may assist - but I'm not a DB expert). I think you can change the collation for all remaining tables in the Joomla db to match Moodle.

Also those 777 file permissions are not good. I can understand Moodle might "require" such but that's bad coding if so.

Change all Tables to utf8mb4_unicode_ci. Use phpmyadmin to do this.

Thanks for the quick response folks. I'll try updating the tables (and columns?) to the same collation and report back! I'll also check on those 777s - that might be my misunderstanding.

Well after an afternoon, and thanks to your advice, I have it complete.

It was the mixed collation in the Joomla DB. I first changed the collation on the *Moodle* database thinking it was the Joomla one. Oops. When I finally figured out which one was which, J4 installed with one error. I hadn't selected a different editor than JCE which I had disabled due to it being IDed as blocking the upgrade. This led to a bad time where I couldn't uninstall anything because the JCE component was missing and so some of the interfaces just threw an error. I finally got past that, fixed up the templates, and all is running as before.
