Disable banners before upgrading?

Post by mbsfirst » Sun Feb 16, 2025 9:02 pm

i was told banners are not in Joomla 4. Should i disable before upgrading. Are there any other standard joomla modules or plugin that need to be disabled?

Follow the instructions for migration of 3.10 to 4.x
https://docs.joomla.org/Planning_for_Mi ... 0.x_to_4.x
https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_3.x_to_4 ... _Migration

Personally I would be looking at migrating to J5 after you have done J4. J4 > J5 should be a simpler process but also involves the pre-update check.

Banners are in Joomla 4 (and Joomla 5). What is your source for saying otherwise? Any core items will be upgraded you don't need to take any specific action.

It's third-party extensions including templates you need to be concerned with and the pre-update check that Joomla Update does may identify these as potentially problematic and give you recommended actions such as updating, uninstalling, or disabling the extension until the J4 migration is completed and then reinstall or re-enable and upgrade such extensions. Some may simply not work at all in Joomla 4, and so you'd need to find a replacement equivalent of any used in 3.10.x. Other extensions will likely pass the pre-update check tests, but some may also be flagged as "undetermined" so you might need to do some additional investigation as to extension availability for J4.

You should ensure you have the latest available updates for all third-party extensions. Some may work across versions and have one released for 3.x,4,x/5.x others may have separate versions for each Joomla release. If you disable such, do the Joomla update then update the extension afterwards there shouldn't be an issue.

The other thing to note is even if J3.x extensions were stated to work on J4, there are external factors to consider, such as higher system requirements. It is best to also review https://manual.joomla.org/docs/next/get ... uirements/ to ensure your hosting has the specified requirements for J4 andJ5.

i was told by the template developer that banners did not work in Joomla 4. i have update all necessary extensions and disabled 3rd party plugins. I had no conflicts with the pre-check so I just went ahead and proceeded with the update. this is the error message i receive:

Warning: require_once(/home2/xxx/components/com_banners/helpers/banner.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home2/xxx/templates/j-directory/html/mod_jbanners/default.php on line 10

Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/home2/xxx/components/com_banners/helpers/banner.php' (include_path='.:/opt/cpanel/ea-php74/root/usr/share/pear') in /home2/xxx/templates/j-directory/html/mod_jbanners/default.php on line 10

What you are seeing is a template override in a custom template. You should have switched to the Joomla default template before updating. You could go back to the last backup and try again after switching templates. Or you could run the Forum Post Assistant and post the public results here.

All third-party plugins not including your template? (I previously mentioned that).

There is a Banners module in J5
Set the Template to the Joomla Template before updating.
