Upgrading Joomla 3.10.11 to Joomla 4 version

Post by Okayode » Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:04 pm

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade an existing Joomla site of 3.10.11 to Joomla 4 by doing its backup, downloading it, and restoring it to a local host. I just want to test if my site won't have any errors on a local host before switching the online version to 4.0. I don't want any downtime.

Thank you so much for your responses.

Kayode.

Hi. Of course it is possible. You need WAMP or LAMP (or FAMP) installed on your local computer.

There is a simpler solution. You can register a free temporary hosting account and deploy your test site there.

Restrictions would prevent that

To copy the site, follow these instructions:
https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website

(use the Akeeba Method, it is the easiest).

There will be a short downtime when you restore your upgraded 4.x site back to the live host since you have to remove the existing site, in order to restore the upgraded one via Akeeba Kickstart.

No. Sorry, Webdongle.
There will be no restrictions. I don't want to advertise this hosting (https://timeweb.com/ru/services/hosting/), but this is just for an example. Registration takes two minutes, then you get 10 days of fully functional hosting. Once the test period is over, you are under no obligation.

You will find that free Hosting is very limited

There is also the free web hosting offered by Joomla, (launch.joomla.org) via its hosting partner.

This has minimal limitations such as 500MB disk space and having to renew every month to continue using it but otherwise, I think it is a fully functional linux webhosting account for hosting Joomla sites.

Stubbornness is cool. But sometimes you just have to solve technical problems.

Problem solved.

So you created a jpa of a large working j3.10.12 site
Created a database
Uploaded the jpa and kickstart
run kickstart
installed the backup
and run the upgrade

Probably only available on type VPS hosting, but Snapshot is well Worth the entra money.

Take a Snapshot before upgrading. If something goes wrong, a rollback can be done in seconds.
