Is having lots of links an issue

Post by SPDJoomla4 » Thu Jul 14, 2022 4:24 am

Hi,

As you will see I am very ignorant of Security issues. My Joomla 4.1 site is personal, non-commercial, for a limited audience, less than 1000 for now but in theory it could grow.

My site is a catalogue of sorts, related to a PC game, that has no login. As a catalogue it is displaying links to resources that are useful to visitors, which will be filterable. These ‘resources’ are Google Docs and Spreadsheets, [youtube] videos, Github sites, Discord Posts and link to other various websites.

My question is, does my site having all these links to other location cause any potential problems for those locations. Like am I supplying potential victims for DoS attacks or any other malicious acts?

If so, is there anything I should be doing to help prevent that. Having a login is not really an option, I wouldn’t use it if I had to create a login. tbh, I am more concerned for the locations I hold links to than myself, I would have no problem just shutting down my site if something did happen.

Apologies for the lengthy post, as I said ignorant of this stuff and didn't know how to describe it any better.
Thanks for reading.

I don't see why. The whole internet is about linking to other sources.

If your site is about "guinea pigs", and a guinea pig hater would like to do harm, they will find possible links to attack from other sources (Google/Bing/Yahoo/Wikipedia/etc).

Thanks very much for your response. It makes complete sense. :-) I just hated to think that my ignorance of this stuff would cause others issues. You have put my mind at easy that I am not helping those d*mn guinea pig haters in any way.
Cheers

You're welcome!

btw: An attacker needs just one URL/IP address for a DDoS attack, that will be "visited" by thousands of different bots from all over the world.

Some websites use JavaScript to retrieve and display parts of the content. Those are a bit more difficult to scrape than websites with plain HTML outputs.

Thanks for the follow-up. Javascript is beyond my capabilities unfortunately and with a budget of £0, can't go to professionals so. I can't imagine my site getting much interest any way, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some 'key component' to my site that every one knows about but me ;-)
Cheers again
