Recommendations for extension...

Post by JAVesey » Mon Sep 18, 2023 7:29 pm

Evening all,

I'm looking for a J4-compatible extension to replace this admirable beauty from Michael Richey:
https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... striction/

I used it to block registrations which use specific email domains and specific email addresses on allowed email domains. Also used it to redirect registrations using certain email domains to a specific user-group. Worked brilliantly on my J3 site pre-upgrade but it isn't compatible with J4 :(

Can anyone recommend an alternative, please?

Many thanks in advance.

Block registrations which use specific email domains and specific email addresses

I thought there was an option to do this in Joomla. ???

Did you read the documentation for https://docs.joomla.org/Special:MyLangu ... in_Options

The same approach is used in J! 4.x. This setting prevents users trying to create new accounts from specified domains, e.g. you can disallow registrations from gmail.com if you want.

Thank you for the reply :)

I'm aware of the built-in functionality but it doesn't do what I want; for example, if I were to block gmail.com accounts from registering then genuine, bona-fide potential users would be unable to register.

With the aforementioned J3 plugin I could:

1. send all users with certain email domains to a "pending" user-group when they login.
2. exclude existing, genuine, users with those email domains from being reassigned to the "pending" user-group when they login, i.e. they stayed registered users.
3. block specific email addresses from any email domain from registering.

The simple block-all registrations with specified domains approach of the J4 core functionality is something of a sledgehammer when compared to the J3 plugin I was using.

Unless I've misunderstood how it works?

Many thanks

Fair enough. You want something that selectively places registration attempts from questionable sources into a grab-bag that allows you to decide after-the-event whether or not to let them go one stage further.

Michael Richey designed a lot of extensions for J! 3.x and, although writing his intention to "gradually shift all of [his] extensions over to Joomla 4", we haven't seen any real movement on that front since he wrote about the release of J! 4.0 beta 1 (which was 3 years ago) . As he also wrote, "many of [his] extensions have had their functionality embedded within the core of Joomla 4 and are now unnecessary."

I don't know what you can do about your particular question, I'm sorry to say. I have my own approach to managing unwanted user registration attempts and I'm fairly relaxed about what I have. Good luck, though. 8)

Yeah, been waiting in hope that Michael would update some of his extensions.

I'm looking at updating this particular extension myself. With 5 mins work I got it to install (changed the "isAdmin()" code in two places in one file) but the plugin throws a "framework" error when trying to open it. Solving that might take more than 5 mins ;)

Many thanks
