Maybe you could ask the developer of K2 if they are developing a Joomla 4 version?

K2 will indeed be available for Joomla 4 in the coming months. It would have been a much faster conversion process if the Joomla core team hadn't renamed the Joomla codebase (again) & with no backwards compatibility layer at all.

I am terrified by the prospect to not use K2 in Joomla. Been using it since J1 and K2 is the only reason I stayed with Joomla for the last 12 years. I hope Joomlaworks comes with a J4 update, otherwise all the websites I have built and maintain presently are dead, and so am I

Sorry to read of your predicament, trzv. Have you experimented with migrating K2 into Joomla articles using this plugin: https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... migration/

Depending how it goes, it may help you move past your reliance on K2.

Regards,
Geoff

I gave up on waiting for K2 some months ago.....if you read their responses on their Forum you'll see why.

So I used the JA conversion plugin and it works well......without it I'd have had a lot of problems!

So I reached out to Joomla Works about K2 and offered them funding and space to develop it and I heard nothing back (I have a lot of websites that use the k2 system).

Since I heard nothing from them I decided starting yesterday I'm building my own version and making it work the way I've always want it to.

The lack of communication and empty promises of the K2 team is a bit of an insult to the Joomla community that have supported them.

It's neither a simple or difficult task. Many achieve this with little issues.

It is apparent that K2 has come to it's end, and we aim to release Everist from January.

This is good advice, indeed. But I'm locked out of the joomlaworks forum before I can make a single post. Honestly, I see this as yet another K2 programmer nonsense... ok. So, if you'll excuse me, I'll leave this message on my favorite Joomla forum.

Attention, ready for testing fork K2 for Joomla 4. The author (eworkers) invites to test all who are interested in further development of this wonderful Joomla component K2:
To be true about the state of this repo, we think it is stable enough, but we don't want to advertise such announcement before we see some fair number of user implying so!
....
Meanwhile, we thank you for taking the time to introduce this discussion and we encourage all others to get involved so they can enlighten us more about next steps.

The biggest problem with K2 was the communication with all the userbase. Joomlaworks simply didn't keep people updated and many have moved on to just using Articles.

Since announcing us working on a unique version we're calling Everist, I've had a number of people reach out about it. I'm looking to launch testing in January and have it ready no later then February with features that are not available with K2.

I, like many others, grew frustrated with zero communication and I have many Joomla deployments that relied on the K2 component working with other key plugins to service those websites.

It is also very ironic that I have looked at the code and I myself got it working on J4 within a week, just to keep these deployments operational.

This being said, it lacks a lot of features and I intend on innovating and progressing the Everist variation.

Hello

we are still waiting for k2 for joomla4. Any alternative? How to migrate k2 content into the alternative?

I don't know which K2 functionality you currently use,
but since Joomla 3.7 there might be an alternative in the Joomla core:
Custom Fields, see https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Adding_custom_fields

Why won't the Joomla team think about the ability to comment on articles?
Perhaps they remember the lawsuits brought against Microsoft by player developers?

Because Joomla is a CMS and not a blogging platform. The majority of the Joomla instances are set up as websites, not as blog websites.

You can turn your Joomla into a blog website if you want: there are plenty of blog extensions that add the ability to comment on articles.

Are there any news on that?
And can you share the code for K2 runnning in J4 with the community?
Thanks,

I myself am very cautious, the makers of K2 now promise to fork Joomla and "do it right". While Joomla 4 is absolutely not great destroying the whole add on ecosystem by becoming incompatible, K2 has now left us hanging for more than a year without a message if K2 will ever be supported on Joomla 4. Tons of users have asked and asked and asked and waited and waited AND WAITED, for nothing, no messages, nothing, while the K2 website still claimed that K2 was usable. Yep, just not on a supporte current Joomla version (which is now 4) that is.
I would not trust a person that is such a bad communicator and letting their "customers" hanging. Yes, K2 is free and I'm grateful for all the hard work that went into it. But telling me not to trust Joomla 4 and their developers (joomlaworks claims they will be dead very soon) and trusting a person that has made my life really hard by being silent for a long time, letting me hang with a super important site for me that uses K2 and wondering if I have to migrate back to standard Joomla to do the Joomla 4 upgrade does not inspire trust for the future. I now decided to dump K2, as I need a Joomla site that is running supported code that gets security updates.I trust the Joomla devs much more, so far they have done exactly what they said they would.

As somebody that works a lot with opensource software, I know that forks are hard to pull off, Joomla is a large project, I very much doubt that joomlaworks can pull that off. So will Joomla fail in the future? It might. But would I assume that this wild far fetched and complex fork (including getting the funding for it) will fail? Much more likely. That is just from my experience and my 5 cents.

J4/5 are failures. Too many bugs, too much fuss and on top of that some functionality was removed (e.g the print/email options). Not to mention the needless admin "design"-disaster.

Some people, who unfortunately forced their way into a positive momentum when Joomla was actually getting users from other software and messed up everything, did not understand that:

1. We built and/or run complex sites and we do not want our tools to change. Especially all the time and over nothing. Or worse, very buggy versions.

2. Updating or maintaining sites means content and users. Not what programmers believe.

3. The time we have available for programmer nonsense is exactly zero 0 seconds. They did not use it wisely.

Forking was inevitable. Good luck with the initiative of the K2 folks and I hope this continues from where it stopped: J3. Either there is a good fork and a future, or web admins will look for other software. Some already have.

@Hekate keep being happy with a system that's 15 years old, that has a print email button.

J4/5 wins J3 in any meaningful aspect.
Performance, security, UX, versatility, architecture, coding standards.
These are not abstract notions, they are quantifiable metrics.

K2 will follow a path, followed by many others before it. Hope the result to be different, but the chances are very slim.

1 year old.
J3.10.12 was released July 2023.

[removed]

I do not know in which alternative universe J4/5 passes for anything other that a massive failure, but in the real world less than 4% bothered with it, which is why support for J3 had to be extended even under payment scheme. That's right, it became preferable to pay even a fee while planning where to move next, than waste money and time in that overbloated junk, full of bugs and shortcomings.

Congratulations must also be given to those came up with such a "design", on top of all the other problems. It takes considerable effort to make something so dysfunctional, ugly, and needing 3x-4x more clicks to do the same job.

The result is that pretty much everyone got the message, started looking for other software, depending on the type of websites they run, and moved on. There are good options available, specialized, for e-shops, and the same goes for news/magazines/blogs. For network/community projects and user-based platforms, given that CB is still thriving, the intranet potential of Joomla still remains. But should CB abandon buisiness, that is it.

[removed]

Since there are still some buisinesses that invested significantly in Joomla - K2 folks being one of those - there are some good prospects. If something serious comes out of it, fine. If not, no one will lose their sleep over it.

@Hekate Once again you write a lot by saying nothing.
Give me a single measurable metric that J3 beats J4.
