Page Navigation Issue

On our website we have over a hundred pages called "Past Shows" that we have in a Past Show category. We title them by the year they were performed. On the Article sort page for Past Shows they are mostly correct when sorted by title, and we can manually move the out-of-order articles to the right order. Most of the out-of-order articles are out of order because their ID# is not consecutive to the articles before and after them.

When we click on the navigation (either Content - Page Navigation from Joomla or Content - JExtBOX Page Navigation Plus) the sort order becomes the ID#, not the titles or how we have manually sorted them. We cannot figure out how to fix this. If we could change the ID# to a number that is in order, then everything would sort correctly. Or if a Page Navigation would use our manually sorted list, it would work. In Joomla 3, we had a page navigation that worked when we made sure the articles were in the right order by manually sorting the out of order ones. That plugin is no longer working for Joomla 4. We are trying to update our site on a test site, and it is frustrating to not be able to figure this out. We've spent hours on it. Does anyone have any help or ideas? We appreciate your help.

For ordering events/shows/agenda items I usually use Joomla Articles with Custom Fields to add structured data like location, etc.
I use the Creation date for the date of the event.
To display the items, I usually use the menu item type Category Blog, and configure it to order the items on Create date.
When you navigate to the second page, the items on the second page are also in the right date order.

Thanks, Peter, for your reply. Does your answer work for articles in a category where you want an arrow (navigation) from one article to either the previous article or the next article? We want the 100 articles in sort order of date of show and want navigation between the articles at the bottom. Thanks for your help.
