Cassiopeia template shows full screen

Post by Hindro » Mon Oct 18, 2021 11:47 am

Hi everyone

Why does the Cassiopeia template appear full screen even though I set it to either static or fluid layout? I hope the Joomla 4 blog with the Cassiopeia template is not full, want it to be similar to the Protortar template. I have also cleared cache in Joomla and browser.

I just upgraded from Joomla 9.10.2 to Joomla 4.0.3.

Please help!

Static should be the equivalent of "boxed" in Protostar.

Fluid is the wide (full) screen setting.

Try different computer perhaps. Different browsers?

Hi AMurray,

I have set the cassiopeia template to static but it still looks full screen or looks wide. Are there any other settings required?

The width of the Cassiopeioa template—with "static" style set—and how much padding you see on the left and right depends on the size of the window that you're looking at. Bigger screen width ==> more padding; smaller screen width ==> less padding. Try it for yourself. :)

I can't reproduce the issue, unless you're referring to the header and banner areas. Those are full width by design but can be changed with CSS or template override.

@Hindro, a link to your site would help us identify if in fact the site is "static" or "fluid" mode, per the comments above.

I think even Protostar still had the full width banner/header with the 'boxed' content.

The navigation "banner" is "full width" yes (as @Sharky notes). The left and right padding expands or reduces in size depending on the width of the browser window. Easy to reproduce: shrink the window.

Please note that the width of the Main Content area in Cassiopeia is a whole lot wider than the content area is in Protostar.
The content width in Cassiopeia is set to almost 80rem (around 1300px or more), while in Protostar it's something like 960px.

So if you are viewing your site on a small(ish) screen, it can look almost full-width.

If you want the "Protostar look" back, set a max-width (of for instance 1000px) on .site-grid in your user.css .

But keep in mind that many people use large to very large screens, and Protostar can look puny on large screens. While on small devices (phones etc) it doesn't matter anyway, the main content area there will always take up full width, just as it does in Protostar.
The fact that an opinion is widely held is no evidence whatsoever that it is not utterly absurd.
