Purpose of Joomla 4.1 Duplicate Template Style

Hi everyone,

I've been creating some Cassiopeia child templates today - what a great step forward in functionality!

However whilst looking at this I was trying to figure out what the Duplicate template style does.

In my case it appears to create only a copy of the style in the styles list but no additional files in the templates and media/templates folders.

Creating and testing a user.css in the duplicated style applies styling to the duplicated style and the Cassiopeia template it was duplicated from as when you open the duplicated style files and details view, all the folders show file paths to the original template's files.

Therefore, I'm missing some really obvious point, or perhaps my installation is broken.

Given that child templates exist now, could anyone tell me under what circumstances might the duplicate template style feature be used in Joomla 4.1?

A style is a saved set of options in a template.

For example with cassiopeia you can change the colour scheme

So if you want to have another colour scheme then you just create a new style.

A style only changes options

The Template Styles work the same way it did in J3.

I'm not sure I fully grasp the purpose of it in J4.1 with the arrival of child themes but I can now understand how it would be used.

Is there any way to copy the template itself, not just the style? I want to make a new template based on Cassiopeia, so I duplicated the style. But as I read above, this seems to copy a set of options. Instead, I'd like a different template so I do not mess up anything from the original one. Help will be appreciated.

We have found that NicePage is a great solution for bespoke template and page layouts, with many features not found in canned templates. There are also a bunch of pagebuilders that create individual page layouts. Either one of these actually over-shadow the cassi-child template feature, which really doesn't do much insofar as layouts and configurations go, but does allow changes in the visuals through css.

P.S. We are not paid evangelicals for NicePage or any other similar program, but only make this reference to identify an alternative to the "child" templates, whose function is grossly understood.

In J4.1 you can make child templates.
