Creating template as Cassiopeia copy

Post by joesboat » Sun Mar 31, 2024 5:53 pm

In 2022 panel user 'aitim' posted the Template Duplication topic and reported successfully copying the cassiopeia installation, renaming all instances of cassiopeia to Sagacic; and deploying. That topic is now locked.

I see the benefit of using a copy of cassiopeia for my home page, and have repeated several of the steps he reports. Have successfully created a duplicate template with one exception - the installation provides the folder base/media/templates/site/<new name> but does not populate the files. I achieve functional success by manually copying files from base/media/templates/site/cassiopeia folder to the one named for the new template.

With that success, I must assume that files in that folder were provided by other joomla 4.x installations. I'd like to confirm this is correct. Please advise.

FYI - I recognize the power of child templates for creating unique overrides for other files but have not figured out how to to use them to override features of the template files. Any guidance appreciated.

Hi. At that time, Cassiopea did not have a child template option. From the moment this option appeared, the Template Duplication option is no longer available.

When creating a child template, files are not copied. You must copy them manually, only those that you want to override. Files that you are not going to affect are not necessary to copy. They will work through the parent template.
