Hi,
Hope this makes sense, even just a little. :-) Ignorant of SEO as you will see. fwiw, SEO is not a a make or break issue for my site as its a personal project with no business or income involved at all. That being said, I of course would like it to show up in relevant searches.
At this time I have not done anything proactive regarding getting my site found mainly because over the next few months I will be re-do my site and moving it to a completely different URL/Domain. Its not even a sub-domain.
So my question is... is it worth me researching and being more proactive about getting my site and articles showing up in searching now or would everything get 'reset' when I move everything to new URL? I should add the content will remain the 90% the same.
Or should I just leave it for now and focus on SEO more when I have the site up and running in new domain
Again I hope that made some kinda sense
Cheers

If your starting over with a new site then SEO for the old site is a waste of time.

I would also leave it for now.
However, I would create a sitemap of the current site before moving to another domain.
And use it for search engines to create "301 redirects" on the old domain to the new domain,
after the launch of your new domain.

Cheers for the info.
I have a vague memory of redirects from when I did a site a very long time ago, will do some research and implement the site map as you suggest
Thank again! :-)

If you are keeping the old site live, it would work to your advantage to 301 redirect to the new pages

The 301 redirect seems to be the best idea as others suggested.
You can easily set this up in a htaccess file or a few lines of PHP (with header() ).
Be sure that your canonical urls are good too. A updated sitemap also works wonders

Re: Moving Site Soon - Should I deal with SEO now?
Since people are still responding to this, thank you btw, I should probably provide a little more detail in what is happening. Basically I am going to be moving the current site to a new domain/url because the name is more targeted at the site content. However I will be repurposing the old site to hold more specific content related to myself.
I have to admit I have not looked into 301 redirect yet as the move will not be taking place until next year. However my current plan is just to have a 'If you're looking for X, click here, update your bookmarks' type message in module somewhere on all pages.
The current site has not been submitted to search engines nor have I gone to any length to make it seo, except what already part of Joomla. Most visitors are just getting there via links in various places or word of mouth which is fine for now as its a WIP :-)
Thanks again for all responses
