Canonical Issue with Caps

Post by schlosss » Mon Jan 23, 2023 9:04 pm

Hello, When I scan my website with tools like sem rush and Search Console I get duplicate content issue with many of my pages. It is always just to urls of the same page. One with first letters capped and

the other without. The sitemap is generated by 4SEO and it shows all lower case. In Joomla I only see lower case also. Any Idea what could be causing 2 versions of same page like this? Thanks, Steven

This issue is known as a "Canonical Issue with Caps" or "Capitalization Canonicalization Issue". It occurs when there are multiple versions of a URL that lead to the same content, but they use different capitalization for the letters in the URL.

To solve this issue, you need to set a canonical tag for each page, which tells search engines which version of the page is the preferred version. You can do this by adding a canonical link element to the head section of your HTML code. The canonical link element should point to the preferred version of the URL and it should be consistent with the case used in your sitemap.

For example, if you prefer the lowercase version of your URLs, you should add the following code to the head section of your HTML: <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.com/page-name">

Replace "https://www.example.com/page-name" with the preferred URL of your page.

Additionally, you can use redirects to ensure that all versions of the URL resolve to the preferred version. For example, you can set up a 301 redirect from the uppercase version of the URL to the lowercase version.

Once you have implemented the canonical tag and redirects, you should resubmit your sitemap to Google Search Console to ensure that the correct version of the URL is indexed.
