Article link not SEF after joomla4 update

Post by rordonezgarcia » Tue Oct 15, 2024 1:27 pm

While on joomla3, a link to another article was created in the admin dashboard whose URL was:

Code: Select all

index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=86:bevolkingsregister&catid=9:hulp-bij-onderzoek&Itemid=101
In the website, the url would be changed to be SEF:

Code: Select all

9-hulp-bij-onderzoek/86-bevolkingsregister
This is according to the old joomla3 router where the aliases were prepended with the ids of the categories/articles.

When I updated to Joomla 4, the link's URL in the admin dashboard remained the same.

In the website though, the url would change a bit but not be SEF

Code: Select all

?view=article&id=86:bevolkingsregister&catid=9:hulp-bij-onderzoek
So how are articles with urls to another articles expected to be kept SEF from Joomla3 and Joomla4?

Hi

The problem is likely that you are using "...&Itemid=101" in your non-sef URL. This is the menu item id of the home page (in general) and so either it does not exist on your updated site (unlikely) or the content type of the home page does not match the non-SEF URL.

You should try using another menu item ID (&Itemid=xx) in your non-SEF URL, or even create a (hidden) menu item just for that article.

Thank you shumisha for the answer.

I think someone may have manually edited the URL to include the menu item id, because I can't reproduce having such URL within Joomla3 by pointing to the same exact article.

Hi

It depends on how you create the link exactly. Hard to say.

Did you also update .htaccess after updating to Joomla 4?

If not, using your FTP program or your hosts cpanel file manager:
1. Rename .htaccess to htaccess-old.txt
2. Rename htaccess.txt (this file came with J4) to .htaccess
Note there is a dot in front of the filename

See if that solves your issue.

Do you have a menu item of type "category blog" for the "hulp-bij-onderzoek" category?
