Automate Modules: Articles - Category

One of our websites uses a module (Modules: Articles - Category) to display the most current sub-categories of the News category on the website. To get the title of each of the (8) sub-categories to display in the module we 'manually' feature the most current article. The problem is that this is a manual process and prone to errors.

We've played with the module quite a lot and while we're able to configure it to control the order of the display the sub-category names (ie: alphabetically, date, etc.) and define which of sub-categories to display we're unable to configure the module to automatically display only the most recent article from each sub-category — eliminating the need for manually marking (and unmarking) articles as featured.

For instance under Date Filtering and Date Range Field there isn't an option for Most Recent (currently set to Start Publishing Date) and/or to limit the number of articles (ie: 1, 2, 3, etc.) from each sub-category to appear (Category Depth is set to 1 but doesn't seem to have an effect).

Does anyone know if this is possible and if so how to accomplish this?

Have you tried the new Articles module in Joomla 5.2?

What about creating one module instance for one sub-category to display the most recent article in that sub-category.
Duplicate that module for each subcategory, changing the sub-category that it should display.

Yes we thought of doing that. It just seems cumbersome since you can control most of the other aspects of the display in the one module. Maybe it will appear in a future release of Joomla ;-)
