Is there a way to see how many users use the smart search on a site and what they search for?

Smart Search -> Options: set Gather Search Statistics to Yes.

Ok. Then what? It looks like it only shows very limited information under the "Statistics" tab.

I don't know! Perhaps someone else will explain what to expect and how to use the statistics.

Does anyone know how to get more information from the smart search statistics? I'm trying to figure out how often users use the search.

All I get is "The indexed content on this site includes 33,253 terms across 103 links with 8 attributes in 4 branches."

After enabling the plugin you need to go to the Smart Search / Search Terms page. You should see a table showing a list of phrases and the number of hits and results.

Ok. I see that but is that all time or per month? It would be nice if there was a way to organize this data.

This is from a quick google search:

Joomla Smart Search statistics are not automatically calculated on a monthly basis; they reflect the total search data accumulated since the feature was enabled, meaning you see the cumulative search results across all time periods unless you specifically filter the data to view a specific timeframe within the Joomla backend.

But I can find nothing or viewing a different timeframe.

I guess the answer is Don't believe everything you find with Google. Joomla Smart Search only records the total number of hits. Recording hits by date would require a lot more development work.

Why not use Google Analytics for this?
